#1 basses (Let's see 'em) [Poll]

Do you have a #1 bass?

  • Yep. It's my baby!

  • Nope. Each bass serves a different purpose.

  • Kind of... I have a favorite, but it doesn't always get played.

  • I have a favorite carrot, does that count?

For 20+ years I've never had a particular #1. I'd tend to cycle through most of my basses ( including Warwick, Spector, Fender Jazz & Thunderbirds ).
However after a 16 month wait I received my Dingwall D-roc 5 string last October. This has become a game changer and has become #1.

For SURE the #1, but I def do have other basses with a specific purpose.

I play roughly half of my band stuff on upright (which I've had for 25 years, so that's probably like #1.5 lol)
I actually reach for my Martin acoustic the most when I just need to practice/learn a part.
And I just got a fretless 5 which is its own thing.
And then there's my Fodera PJ which I confess I've kinda neglected lately.

I'm curious... how many TBers have a #1 bass? Or are you like me and you have a variety of basses that are each #1 for their specified application?

Either way, we all love bass pics. Let's see those #1 basses!

my new #1 is my dingwall ab1 in my user picture. But i always find an excuse to play my favourite different bases (i have x4 4003’s).

Can you tell me more about the bass in the picture. It looks amazing.

Sorry, I'm not much of a picture-taker. I'll try to remedy that.

That said, my "favorite" bass is my 2012 AmStd P-Bass (see avatar), but it doesn't always get played anymore (it used to be the only bass I'd use, but I'm trying to broaden my horizons). Personally, I love the sound of it with TI Flats, and I think it works for pretty much anything...but it does kinda change the feel of some songs.

In summer 2020, I bought a Fender American Ultra Jazz Bass. I used it on three gigs, then put it back in its case. I didn't really give it a chance. But I had decided, back in Dec '21, that I was going to make that Ultra Jazz work. So, with the exception of one gig, I've used that Ultra on all my gigs this year, and I'm figuring things out.

On stage, I always take 2 basses as equal and identical as possible... let's call them Bass #1 and Bass A. Right now, these spots are occupied by a pair of parts PJs: ash bodies, USA Geddy necks Hipshot detuners, Dunlop straplocks, EXL170 strings, 920d control joints, Decoboom guards, Dominger Thumper neck pups, and Tom Brantley Geddy bridge pups.

Glad to see some other Squiers on here and not just the expensive models.

Considering it was only a couple steps above firewood when I got it, and after many changes, this is still my fallback #1. I only have 3 and play them all but this one is like that favorite chair where your butt imprint fits "just right." Sorry for my mug in the photo but couldn't find one of just the bass right now. :D
