#1 basses (Let's see 'em) [Poll]

Do you have a #1 bass?

  • Yep. It's my baby!

  • Nope. Each bass serves a different purpose.

  • Kind of... I have a favorite, but it doesn't always get played.

  • I have a favorite carrot, does that count?

I always tell my wife that I have different basses for the same reason I have both ratchets and box wrenches in my toolbox-- they do the same thing, but each does something a bit special. So far, she's bought it. That said, I sure like playing my Y2K AmStd Jazz V-- and I like the Epi Jack Casady models almost as much. Life is tough. :bassist:

I have two I would call my #1; both get equal playing time out. Not shown is my Fender Player Jazz, which is still stock.

I've made some mods to this one - added a thumb rest, shaved the neck down for a thinner profile, and replaced the stock pickup for an Aguilar AG 4M. It is currently strung with DR Sunbeams; I also string it with GHS Round Core Bass Boomers (but not at the same time :D).

I had multiple #1s for different things, and then I bought my Dingwall Super J. Now it's the only one I play on every gig I do across many different genres and styles. I bring one of the previous #1s as a backup just in case but they've not been gigged once since acquiring the Super J.

I was thinking about switching to Dingwall and the fanned frets, but I'm worried it will make me like it too much. All the other basses I have will get pushed aside, in other words, LOL. Did you have this experience? Any regrets, if so?

I currently have 15 basses, 14 are 5 stringers, 1 is an 8 string, some active, some passive, 1 is fretless, different scales, different styles.

And I am building 3 more basses ... including a 10 string bass.

so the basses are tools ... I try to use the right tool for the right job.

quite often my favorite will be the bass with a new set of strings and a current set up.

Get the Dingwall, then start selling off your other basses so you can afford the next Dinger.

My #1 is a custom carved top Warmoth Dinky P.

Honorable mention is a Peavey Rudy Sarzo that feels like it was made for me.

I have a slew of basses accumulated over the years and kept because they each offer me something that makes me happy!
Every time I think about thinning the herd I pull them out, play them and realize how loathe I am to actually part with them. I will have to someday.

But not yet!
