And in related news, the Nady wireless system arrived today. I hooked it up real quick and it seems to work. I'll have to spend a little time with it to dial it in. It seems to add a little gain to the signal.

And in related news, the Nady wireless system arrived today. I hooked it up real quick and it seems to work. I'll have to spend a little time with it to dial it in. It seems to add a little gain to the signal.

I had no idea that "squirrelly" was actually a word. I thought it was only a much used creative word-hybred people came up with to describe bad drivers. Motorcyclist call squirrelly riders "squids" (logical and creatively descriptive) and Cyclists used to call squirrelly riders a "Fred". (!?) Love how language has "wiggle" room! 
So I ran into a slight problem. When the Nady wireless receiver is running off the wall wart, it works perfectly. When I power it from the battery pack, I'm getting some pretty bad crackling distortion on the attack of each note. Lowering the gain solves the issue, but then the output is pretty low. At first, I thought it might be because the battery pack is 13.5 VDC and the receiver is spec'd at 12 VDC, but looking at the transformer itself, it clearly says 13.5 VDC @ 300 ma, so I think I'm ok there. It must be that the amp and receiver are now sharing a common power ground, which either the amp or receiver doesn't like. The MXR preamp is supposed to arrive tomorrow, and I'm hoping that will resolve this. The amp actually has a balanced input (no reference to power ground on the negative side of the input), so I'm hoping if I run the signal through the balanced output section of the MXR, that may resolve this.
Additionally, the Nady is supplied with a signal cable to be used between the receiver and amp. The instructions state there is some kind of cap in line, which helps prevent "crackling sound". That may or may not be what I'm experiencing. I'll also try running that cable from the receiver to the MXR, which may also resolve the issue.
Or, maybe I have some squirrelly gremlins running through the wiring of this home grown contraption.

I would try isolating the Nady receiver's negative output from the battery negative (possible coupled through the amp chassis?). I've experienced audio driver circuits that do not like the audio -ve being bridged to it's power supply -ve. They end up distorted and crackly like you describe. Maybe you can put an AC coupling capacitor in series on the -ve wire. Otherwise you could transformer couple the receiver's output, like a DI box with the ground lift enabled. Use a ohmmeter to ensure it's isolated.

I have this on order - it should arrive today assuming the weather permits.
I had a nice credit courtesy of my credit card points, so I figured this would do the trick, though I originally ordered it to boost the gain. If the unit itself, which I'll run off the 9V battery, doesn't isolate the ground, the direct out with the ground lift will. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

So I'll either have to make an XLR to RCA cable to connect the direct out, or just run the Nady off a separate 12 volt supply, maybe with 8 double A batteries. Either that or @michaelwayneharwood 's squirrelly gremlins are at it again, with their multi-dimensional portal, phase inversion nonsense.

Link courtesy of @MrArose13 on page 1 of the thread. I used a 1/4" stud screwed into the bass, and sandwiched the strap between 2 washers.

I don't have the schematic for this box, but I'd bet that the ground lift only affects the XLR output.
