2011 NFL Draft

I heard Leslie Frazier comment that they chose Ponder to add some competition at the QB position. Don't you do that with late round QB picks, not the 12th pick overall? A 12th pick QB is a franchise QB.

I'm not sure I understand what they were trying to do there... Several good QB's fell after the initial surge, so it seems to me like they would've been better of drafting a Defensive player or a weapon for their QB to use. Or blocking. Bret could've used some blocking during his stay in Viking land.

I agree.

Also, I'm looking forward to watching Gard throw Reggie Bush under the bus.:D

:p

Won't happen. He will either restructure his contract and stay (if he's got any sense), restructure and be traded (if he wants to be a whiny prima donna), or get his butt cut (if he won't restructure).

I am hoping he's smart enough to see the reality of his situation and restructure to a reasonable salary, and stay on a team that will use him to his strengths. However, if he decides to be a yutz, good luck to him.

Either way, the NFC South just got an open letter from PayLoo:

"Y'all enjoy fighting over 2nd place, suckers."

Atlanta...wow, how STUPID was THAT pick? Pretty dumb. There are holes all over the defense and offensive line that needed shoring up, and they didn't do much to address it.

Tampa played it relatively safe, but picking a guy with Erb's Palsy in round 1 and a guy with a serious knee issue (not the ding that Ingram had) in the 2nd? Going defense was the smart move, but I'm not so convinced on WHO they picked being good choices. Going forward, I see them as more of a challenge for my guys than anyone else in the division.

Carolina. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! How long before you guys are in the UFL? Newton will put a few extra butts in seats until it turns out that he really is a "read one and run" QB, and since there are actually 11 good defenders instead of 2 or 3 now, he can't play that kind of game in the NFL. He's a big, fast dude, but so is EVERYONE ELSE now - that "man among boys" crap only works when you're playing against mostly boys - that don't happen in Sunday football where everyone else is a "man among boys", only in Saturday football. ;)

Outside of the NFC South:

Browns, thank you for making Dimitroff and the Falcons look like dunces. However, that didn't take MUCH effort. Y'all did well!

Other good drafts - New England (what a surprise! ;) ), Green Bay (again...what a surprise!!), Cincinnati (now that IS a surprise!), Chicago.

Bad drafts:

Vikings, really? Looks like Adrian Peterson is this generation's Barry Sanders, right down to having played college ball in the same state and pro ball in the same division. Oh, except that Sanders didn't fumble every 3rd carry. ;) Pondering the Ponder pick...still pondering....still pondering...hey, I thought you guys got rid of "stupid" when you fired Chilly!? Apparently not.

Seattle....did you guys just write off the 2011 season? Hope y'all enjoyed winning that Wild Card game last season, you won't repeat that without a QB, and y'all ain't got one now.

I dunno Gard. The Dirty Birds gave everyone a good run last year with Turner back in full stride. I'm not saying the pick made sense, but if they feel like they can win with only one more target for Ryan...

Tampa had a heck of a draft IMO, and fixed about the only thing that didn't work for them last year. Bowers will either be a 10 sack guy, or he will sit the pine like Derrick Morgan did for us this year (and that really sucked).

As far as Seattle is concerned, I think Pete is banking on getting a third year, and Andrew Luck. They played better starting around mid-season, but instead of picking some NFL ready players to "win now," they picked a buttload of 2-3 year projects.

I'm fairly content with the way the Bucs draft went. They beefed up the D a bit and I'm happy with that.

I'm somewhat okay with the way the Jets draft went. I like that they picked a DT in the first round. But as for a QB and RB, especially in the RB department.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the Jets 1st rounder...hope he's in camp and not JAIL once the lockout is over, he got passed over for a serious legal issue, I think....

...and for the Bucs, they got one DE that can't lift his right arm over his shoulder, EVER; and another one that has a serious knee injury - very risky draft for them, on reflection.

Matty Iced can't hit either of his receivers if he's on his @$$, which is quite likely since they did nothing to address a below average offensive line; and they REALLY did nothing to address their defense in Atlanta, which after the drubbing they took from Green Bay should have been a #1 priority.

I don't think Tampa's draft was nearly as bad as the Falcons, but they took one guy that can't lift one arm over his shoulder and another one that is likely to be on the PUP as their #2 (the Saints took a guy in that situation, but he was a 7th rounder). I'd be more worried about Bowers riding the PUP list than the pine, and the kid from Iowa, nice story, but if the OT across from him is aware of his inherent weakness, he's going to end up being a non-factor.

Agreed on the Seattle situation, they're looking like they're treading water. Downside of that is everyone in their division either has a QB (St. Louis), drafted one (San Francisco), or is very obviously going to address it in FA once the BS is over (Arizona). Seattle seems to have no plan in place...long-term, that may be good, but short term, it will definitely put them in a bad spot with their fan base. They did address the OL situation, but they seemed to "reach" a great deal in the process....

That's what I meant about Morgan. He played in about 1 game at 100%, missed time on the PUP list, then went IR after the nagging injury caught up again. It was a shame too, because with him and a few other guys healthy, we were a top-5 D. When the injuries hit, the D (and team) fell off the face of the Earth.

If last year's TB draft STEALS are any indication of Mark Dominik's ability to research and evaluate passed over talent, I think TB may have had another successful draft.

Packers offense-heavy in the draft. Got our heir apparent to LT Clifton in Sherrod. I think the most exciting players chosen are in round 2 Randall Cobb (Tex as I'll call him) who could finally be an answer to our weak return game since Desmond Howard. Also the Hawaii RB Alex Green looks interesting in the 3rd round in an already crowded backfield. His video is interesting because he's running exclusively out of a spread offense and the running lanes seem to be always wide open on his runs which will not be the case in the Packers offense. All the picks are high character guys and this philosophy seems to have worked well with team chemistry this year - no disrupters. Great story on the Williams kid, TE at Arkansas. These are the kinds of guys TT likes, ala Donald Driver, himself a 7th rounder. TT did lots of wheeling and dealing in late rounds and turned 6 picks into 10. He just plain gets the job done.

Though, I do think they need some improvement in the pass rushing department from their front 4, the Jets defense was very solid last season without this kid, so it's a safe assumption that they'll be solid this year, even if the kid can't play for some reason. If it were me, I would've gone with a WR to help get Sanchez another weapon to use, perhaps a safety, but that's me and I'm not privy to all the aspects of the teams needs.

I've got a few friends that are big Iowa fans. They all think Adrian Clayborn is going to be a good asset for the team. They'd know better than me on that, because I don't follow Iowa that closely. From what I've read on the kid, I'm inclined to agree. Da'Quan Bowers was quite good in his one year playing, so he may work out very well.

Overall, I still think the Bucs did alright in the draft. They do seem to know what they're doing. They did go from 3-13 to 10-6.

You Tampa guys shouldn't pay any attention to Gard. He doesn't say anything nice about any of the teams in the NFC South.

Tampa could have picked Ingram and Jordan and we would have heard how terrible both of those guys are. :)

ESPN claims Detroit and Cincinnati had the best drafts. I didn't follow Cincy's but I'm excited about Detroits. I can't wait to see other teams try to block Suh and Farely in the middle. Detrot now has two tackles capable of getting 10 plus sacks, and a pro bowler (Vanden Bosh) on one end and a good pass rusher (8 sacks) in Avril on the other end. We also have three very good depth pieces in Corey Williams, Sammy Hill, and Lawrence Jackson. This means a D line that won't get tiered and will be fresh in the fourth quarter.

They were 16th in the league in pass defense last year with Chris Houston as their #1 corner. If they add one quality outside Linebacker and quality cornerback in FA that defense becomes one of the best in the league. Detroit will get plenty of pressure with their front four, so the linebackers and DB's will all be able to get into coverage and due to pressure won't have to cover as long.

I suspect if (the big if) they can keep Stafford healthy they are a playoff team this season. Please NFL get this lockout thing figured out. this will be the first time since the Sanders years that the Lions could be a serious team. Lashue is supposed to be an excellent power back in the Mendenhall vein, and Titus Young is suppose to add some speed as a slot receiver. They still have needs but I believe they are ahead of the Bears at this point.
