2013-14 NHL Regular Season Thread: Second Period

Er, ok. I'll jump in even though I shouldn't.
Yes, Crosby rocks. He's having the best season THIS YEAR. We're not talking about others because they are not performing at his level right now.
It's not "fanboy"-ing. It's getting behind someone who is absolutely rocking the game. Yes, there's other players that have played as well as him in the history of hockey, and there are players who will out perform him in the future as well. Neither of that has any bearing on this season and what he is doing right now.
Could Kane do better? You bet. But, he's not. We and the tv/radio are not going to get all "fanboy" (as you like to call it) on Kane because Kane is not performing at the same level as Crosby.

The fanboy comments always come out when someone doesn't know what else to say. It's all good though, this is as lively as this thread has been in some time.

In hockey news, Toronto and Philly tonight. I didn't realize how far the Leafs have fallen until reading a preview of tonight's game.

Notice I didn't even take a position one way or the other, just said him having two cups vs one doesn't necessarily mean much when comparing individuals.

If you want to make the case that the Blackhawks have been a better organization over the last few years than the Penguins, I doubt you'll hear much argument from Pens fans. Just funny to see you jump the fanboy gun :D

Nice Bruins win vs a hungry Blackhawks team. Rask made his league leading 7th shutout. Bruins are hot, I just hope they don't run out of gas too soon.

I read the earlier comments about Sidney Crosby and I agree he's a great player and having one hell of the year. Just for the pure fact that I get to watch him almost every game - my vote for MVP would be Bergeron. Not being a fanboy fellas, just my opinion.

Here's an odd stat that came to light during today's BOS-WSH game: Ovechkin leads the NHL in goals by a wide margin with 48. He is also #856 out of 857 players in +/- at -32 (only Nail Yakupov is worse at -33). In other words, although he is +48 for scoring, he has been on the ice for 80 goals against. So, when he's on the ice, the Caps are 1.67 times more likely to give up a goal than to score one. There's a real chance that he will end up leading the league in goals scored and be dead last in the league in +/-.

While I agree that a -32 is terrible and that Ovechkin is a defensive liability, your math is off here. Among other things, +/- stats do not include power play goals; 22 of Ovechkin's 48 goals were on the power play.

Speaking of Ovechkin reminds me of that stupid controller disconnected gif which if you were watching the Wings/ Leafs game tonight could have been applied to the Wings on the second Leafs goal. Wing hauled down a Leaf at the right wing circle, arm goes up for the delayed call, Wings stopped skating and the Leafs took advantage.

Well, it's not so much my math being off, but my understanding of the statistic. So, thanks for setting me straight on that - I wasn't aware.

Not to mention plus minus is a pretty dumb stat. I'd still take ovi on my team any day.
Enjoy golfing in May.
