2013-14 NHL Regular Season Thread: Second Period

Remember how excited we were when Scuderi resigned? Maybe LA knew something we didn't. Maybe Scuderi is still hurt, but trying to play through it like Morrow did last year, which ended up hurting the team more than helping it.

-Mike

I was already preparing to polish the new Stanley Cup when I heard they signed him... kind of ironic three of our best D men this year have been Maatta, Niskanen and Bortuzzo. Martin was having a fantastic year until his injury.

I'm hoping Letang can come back for the playoffs, as he's probably the only one with enough skating ability to cover for Scuderi's mistakes. I don't know what's up with him. Maybe he's playing hurt like you suggested (definitely wouldn't doubt it considering Martin and Letang are out long term, and he's the kind of guy who would do such a thing just like Orpik). I just hope he can turn it around or at least make some incredible play in the playoffs so this isn't my lasting memory of him in a Pens jersey. He's taking up too much of the Pens salary cap to play this way.

You'll get to see the winning streak end.
I predicted last week the Habs would lose to Columbus, then beat the Leafs, The Bruins, and the Sabres.
Should still be an amazing game to see. You won't believe the energy watching a live NHL game. Especially Habs and Boston, which IMHO is the greatest sports rivalry in history.

No question, I am worried about that. Except for the last game in Montreal, the Canadians have had the B's number this season and they are fighting to secure a playoff spot. But the B's have been very consistent lately - should be a good game.

"If you could go back in time and play with any player in history, which one would you knee in the face?"

"What's your favourite hockey play? The flying V or the flying elbow?"

"#AskNeal When you face the Rangers, how hard is it to skate on your knees to give St. louis a cheap shot to the head?"

"Do you make rocket noises when you launch yourself at peoples' heads? if not, why? #AskNeal"

"James, there's a girl I really like and I want to impress her. Should I cross-check her in the face, or knee her in the head?"

I hate the bruins but I respect them because they manage to always clinch a playoff spot without worrying too much. They are always potential Stanley Cup contenders no matter who they face in the finals.

Respect. I only hate them because theyre so frigging good. Except marchand. Dirtier than Cooke.

Wow, I can't believe my Wings are still in it. They've even got key injuries in the farm system. :rollno:

Right now they are without Daytsuk, Weiss, Zetterberg, Albukator, Helm, Bertuzzi and Ericson. And yet they are still #7 in the Eastern conference playoff picture. While they won't make a run this year at the cup they are going to have one great group of forwards for next season. Especially with the development of Nyquest and Tartar.

OTOH they suck at the blue line, with only two legit NHL blue liners right now and no real #1 defenseman.

Well nobody thought Detroit would make it to the playoffs last year...and then when they did, they faced Anaheim, who were the favourites to win against Detroit. Annnndddd Detroit beat them. And survived seven games against the Hawks.

Anything can happen in the playoffs.

Woo Hoo....way to go habs! It woulda been a 1-0 game if not for the ridiculous calls by the refs. Out of the 4 penalties in the 3rd period, only one was a real penalty.
Oh well....a win is a win!!!
Budaj was awesome.

Budaj was awesome, no question. There were some bad calls in the 3rd, but then again there were some bad calls in the 1st and 2nd - the calls probably evened out. Both goals were scored on deflections on power plays; the B's seem to have had the better of the 5 or 6 minutes of the game that were 5 on 5. It wasn't pretty by any stretch but it was close and could have gone either way.

The Habs have a way of disrupting the Bruins - the B's were out of synch pretty much all game - lots of passes in skates or off sticks or to areas that were vacant.

I did learn a few things in my first live NHL game - in Montreal "drop the gloves" doesn't mean to invite a fight, it is something you do when an opposing stick touches your glove and you want to draw a slashing penalty. ;)

What was up with the broken stick that came on the ice from the Habs bench?

I was inspired to write a song based on the Montreal game plan - "Bait, Turtle and Dive" so far I have the title and I want to work in something about "five on five is totally jive, so we bait, turtle and dive." If anyone else wants to contribute a line, feel free. :D

Earlier this season the Habs where playing with their usual speed and skill with some additional grit and toughness which had me worried. I am less worried today.

I will give props to the Montreal fans who went to the game - there seemed to be 6-12 brave souls in every section scattered throughtout the arena.

Some good games lined up tonight. Such a bummer to see Mike Smith go down with an injury for Phoenix, but the timing may be right for the Pens to beat them.

Detroit is fighting for the playoffs with Columbus, and they face off tonight.

I love these myself:

If I could #AskNeal anything: If you owned a bar, how cheap would your shots be? #AskNeal @jneal_18

James, do you prefer the feel of wood or the flex of composite for crosschecking guys in the face? #AskNeal

I can't believe the Pens PR department actually thought this was a good idea. One of the more hated players in the league? Some of that stuff is overboard but a lot of it is pure gold!
