The vintage v4b get warm and have no fans. Mine is a 1972 and has been used 12 hrs in the hot summer sun and it never had a hiccup. Id look for a vintage one if I were you..hell even a recap and new tubes and ur still under the price of a new one with the benefit of the american made amp with american iron. Go with the proven design.

I used to have a 73, and I've got a new one now. I'd gladly take another 73 if someone gave me one, but figure in that it has the same sound as the old one plus it's 20 lbs less and 4 inches shorter, and I'll take the new one.

I've had two 70s versions, my previous and my current. If I had the coin up front/didn't pick up my current 70s V4 on trade then I'd buy a new one. The vingtage ones are great, but having put in the work for the cap job, replacing this part and that, refurbing the functional/aesthetic elements, new tubes, adding a bias adjust, etc I'm not sure I'm that much better off, and I still have an amp with an unknown usage history and 40+ year old parts.

Different strokes for different folks and all, but if the tone is there then I'd take either no question.

I'm having a bit of a conundrum. This amp sounds awesome with my P bass. Just incredible tone. It doesn't sound good with my Roscoe. It is kind of muddy and bland, no matter how I twiddle with both the electronics on the bass ( yes, I try cutting rather than boosting), and the amp controls. Suggestions?

I would say instead that your roscoe doesn't sound good with the v4b. Its a very transparent amp compared to some and I find it really shows the voice of each bass ive tried...some I dont like as much with it and prefer them with more baked in amps.

If it helps cheese... Im not in love with my stingray thru the v4b either. I find it a bit too clangy compared to other amps that tame it more...so you're not alone... but my God, does the jazz sound incredible thru it!

That's true, David. You don't want everything to sound the same. Saw this rig rundown for Billy Gibbons where he's using this fancy schmancy programmable Marshall EQ thingy to read his favorite sound and store presets that make all of his guitars sound the same. I don't get it. I get EQing a bit to keep them from sounding too far afield of each other, but vive le difference, I say. At least I'd say it if I were Estonian.

I don't like the sound of my Roscoe with tube amps. Not exactly sure what it is but it just doesn't play well with tubes.

Jimmy, how is the sound through the micro cabs with the v4b, how does it sound with just one vs two of them, I'm very close to getting this amp, and thought about getting one of the micro cabs and laying it horizontal for small gigs
