I'm going the other way. Playing SVT's and other big amps for a long time, I've finally come to terms that I don't "need" all that muscle. I "downgraded" to the V4B for that reason. It gives me my SVT tone and I get to that incredible power tube growl at a MUCH lower volumes than the big SVT's. Don't get me wrong, I'll never sell my SVT's, and I do have a few occasions to use them during the season (outside gigs, bigger stages) but 90% of my "work" the V4B covers no problemo.

Different applications require different amps. The right tool for the right job but the power requirements can overlap. I use a B-15, a V4B, an SVT, and more powerful amps as necessary. Sitting in the middle, I find that a V4B can fill the niche of a low powered amp as a well as a higher powered one to cover just about any needs. When you need lots of power, an SVT or higher powered amp can step in.

I use a PA amp fed by a tube pre. That could be an Ampeg pre or something else with a VT pedal in front. But honestly, an SVT is a lot of power. Most of the time a V4B is more than is what is needed. A smaller amp is better in that it can be cranked to bring out the sound of a pushed power amp.

Yes, that sound of the pushed power amp is really the final piece of the puzzle for "that" tone. I'd like to see Ampeg put in a half power switch for those small club gigs. Like what they have on the Mesa Prodigy.

I just received a V4B reissue last week. Happy to report- no hum of any kind, just the sweet noise coming from my speakers when I play through this amp. My biggest concern was if it could/would be loud enough. That concern has been put to rest. I played it out this past weekend, no effects, just passive bass, tuner, amp, 8 ohm Fender Neo 410. It was amazing. I also have a Fender SBM 300 which is another amazing amp. Obviously not as much headroom with the Ampeg but this is one sweet sounding amp.

Well, I just cracked and ordered a 212AV cab to go with the V4B. I don't need it since I already have two 210AVs, but darned gas and a friendly (bass playing) salesman who offered me a great discount just proved to be too much temptation. I have been trying to talk myself out of this for a couple of months since the 210s sound so good and are so convenient....oh well, call it a Christmas present to self I suppose. I certainly won't be getting rid of the 210s, but should recoup some of the cost since I will sell my 410HLF.
I wonder how the 212 will go with two 210AVs on top of it....;)
