2013 Ampeg V-4B 100W Reissue Pt2

Gigged V4B and 212AV again last night. That's 3 gigs with this pair. For those who have both, I have a question about the tweeter on the 212AV. Do you run it full, half or off?

My first gig I ran off because it sounded SO bright in sound check. Second gig was half mast. Last night I ran full (Ultra Hi off) and it's really growing on me because it picks up the nuances when I adjust the preamp in my basses. Curious what others think.

I find the tweeter to add more than it detracts, so I've been running it full on.

I've been running the tweeter at -6db from the start. Using my passive P5 or J5 it just works best for me. Mainly using this setup in a TX blues-rock band format. I use other rigs n basses for my funkier formatted bands. But the V4B+212AV is still a fairly new purchase so I'm learning it more. I suppose it will work in my other situations using my active, modern 5ers. Just haven't had to apply it there yet. Summer gigs will prolly allow for more of that.

+1 rodl2005! V4B is at the top of my GAS list with a 212AV a close second. This thread is killing me!!!!!

Fortunately owning two GK 212MBE's satisfies that particular itch for me . But I suspect if i ever do buy a V4B I'll be wantin' the matching cab (or two) just because .

I must say, the 212AV has been a real eye opener. I knew going into my review that - unless Ampeg did something horribly wrong - I was going to be impressed with the V-4B. But I had no idea what to expect out of the SVT-212AV, and it has really impressed me!

Hoping someone can help me out. I have a show coming up and want to use my JDI for the FOH instead of the built in DI. If I am running my amp at 4 ohms into two cabinets should I
a.) daisy chain the cabinets off of one of the 4 ohm taps and then run the JDI off of the other 4 ohm tap?
or
b.) run each cabinet off of a 4 ohm tap and then run the JDI off of one of the cabinets parallel inputs?

One last question, when running the JDI off of an amps output I know you use the pad/speaker sim but should the chord running from the amp into the DI be a speaker cable?

Yes. Some here keep mentioning the matching of the V4B+AV cabs for its looks. But owning a couple other 212 cabs already, I was pleasantly surprised by the unique tone the 212AV/112AVx2 are offering with this amp. And the AV cabs give me more tone options with my Genz Benz 12.2 as well. So powerful and punchy.

There's a lot more to these cabs than just looking very cool on stage with a V4B above em.

Either of those options should work just fine.

Come to the dark side, Rod... I've only got a rehearsal and two gigs under my belt with these cabs. But I am very favorably impressed.

I'm thinking about putting a wedge under the cab so it points straight to my ears. How do I keep the head from tilting over?

Ernie D, you may have answered this earlier in this or another thread, but have you compared the 212AV to 2 112AVs? Curious if there's a difference.

You know, I don't think I could tell any huge difference btw the single 212AV vs 2x112AV's. The 2x112AV's make rig sit up taller on stage which mighta helped me hear mids better. I used the single 212AV last Wed first time and a bassist sat in on the jam on my rig. I could hear some high ticking as he played and sorta muddy lows. When I got back up on stage I saw where he moved the Mid knob to 9:00 from 3:00 and Treble to 9:00 from 1:00. He said he did this cause his G&L L-2000 needed this to sound good. I recall he used to use a older 410HLF in his rig, so that sorta explains his tonal preference. I wish he woulda played as I left it to get a better idea of my tone our front.

Last nite with the 2x112AV's no other players showed up so I played all nite. I felt like the 2x112's maybe had more punch than the week before with 212AV. But again, the two 17" high cabs will sit up higher than a single 19" high 212. Plus this was a week apart and not even side by side comparison, so take this with a huge chunk of salt. Plus I was trying some slight new settings last nite, more gain-less Master, so not a good comparison for that reason too. Now, I did get some nice n nasty tube grind on a few Hendrix tunes when I dug in on the J5 w/tone knob wide open. And I used my P5 w/nylon flats the first week as well.

I had to make two trips with my folding cart to bring in one 112+V4B, then back to retrieve another 112+ a couple gear bags. I walked in with bass+stand as I arrived. But moving the two 112's from back of SUV was a lighter load out/in for me, just cost a couple extra trips. I may use a single 112AV at a gig next Sat, so it always helps to be able to bring one or two cabs as needed.

Never tried it for either recording or live, Rod. It is post-pre so I run a DI if I am using the V4B on a live gig with an engineer (which is not often since I tend to go to the Super Bassman or Orange AD200 for those gigs).
