2014-2015 NHL Regular Season Thread

Can't believe I just discovered this thread. Been an interesting season so far, and there's been some really fun to watch youngsters out there. Terasenko especially. Forsberg has been looking great as well. And of course Tyler Seguin.

Speaking of Seguin...anyone else think the Bruins totally messed up in that whole situation? They traded Phil Kessel to the Leafs in order to get the draft pick they acquired Seguin with, only to trade him away. They let 2 studs slip through their fingers. :banghead:

I no way expected the Pens to beat the Lightning Monday night. For me, that was one of the best games I have seen the Pens play in a couple years. Funny thing to me is how the intermission guys on NBCSN were talking how the Lightning are a fast skating team, so the Pens physical presence really disrupted the Lightning.

Former Seattle Thunderbird Calvin Pickard stood tall against the mighty Penguins in Pittsburgh, but a dang rebound slipped by him on a deflection to end the game. I think he ended up with 47 saves, including a beauty on the Crosby one on one.

I'm really glad Pickard is getting playing time in Colorado. He was in/out, in/out of the goalie rotation for a bit there. Roy has a few good goalies to pick from out there. Good for him.

The B's let two prolific scorers (three if you count Thornton) go, it remains to be seen if any of them turn out to be studs that can lead a team to a championship.

Therefore, plenty of Bruin fans (including me) are basically OK with both transactions with the caveat that Loui Eriksson hasn't yet played as well as could have been expected (I remain hopeful that he'll return to being a 20+ goal scorer again). Remember that the Kessel trade gave the B's the draft pick that turned into Dougie Hamilton. So it was Kessel for Hamilton (stud puck-moving top pairing D), Erickson (former and perhaps future 20 goal scorer) and Smith (young 20 goal scorer). Letting Kessel go also gave the B's the cap space that let them put together the championship team.

The Bruins' thought process was that Kessel and Seguin are similar to Joe Thornton - great players, gifted scorers, but not someone that could lead you to a championship. The difference between Seguin and Kessel/Thornton is that Seguin was a bit of a problem child as well in Boston (missing meetings, general lack of maturity). The Bruins won a Stanley Cup without Kessel (and with a nice contribution from a 19 year old Seguin) and they lost the Finals without Kessel but with Seguin playing well in the regular season but disappearing (1 goal 7 assists in 22 games) in the playoffs. B's fans will only start to feel bad about the trade if Toronto and Dallas start making regular deep runs at the Stanley Cup and the Bruins stop. Well, we start to feel a little bad about when the B's go into scoring slumps, but then we snap out of it after a couple of wins.

Toronto is doing well so far this year, but Dallas is probably not going to the playoffs. The B's, even with the injuries, are likely to make it, but this year has early exit written all over it.

I enjoy watching Kessel and Seguin shoot and score as much as the next guy (except when playing Boston) and I hope that Seguin accelerates his maturity process and maximizes the talent that he obviously has. But, I think the B's will hoist the Cup again before Kessel/Seguin/Thornton does.

Hey bro, welcome back. I've missed you in our NHL thread. How are you liking James Neal? I like what the Pens got for him.

-Mike

This may be one of the better trades in terms of what both teams picked up. I know Patric started the season on fire, and Neal has been great here so far. He brings an edge to the line with Forsberg that's helped carry the team so far.

With Pekka healthy, we look like a very solid team. Usually this is the point of the season that I'm talking about "If we make so-n-so move, then we'll be a solid playoff team," but this yeay, I want us to just sit on our hands and let the season play out.
