2014-2015 NHL Regular Season Thread

I finally caught the Minnesota game from Saturday. We were sloppy but still managed to dominate physically and on the scoreboard. We've also nabbed points every night since the Christmas break, and we've caught the injury bug. How we respond to missing guys like Neal and Ellis will go a long way in determining how our season will go.

I've also got tickets for tomorrow night, so that'll be game number 6 or 7 for me this year. Tickets are a little harder to come by this year.

I haven't given up on Loui yet; Reilly Smith has been great, the other two not so much, but more than likely Dallas wins the trade as they got the best player. The problem was that the Bruins were a little too open and honest with their frustration with Seguin prior to the trade which negatively affected what they got back. The B's backed themselves into a corner and pretty much had to trade him and everyone knew that. In 20/20 hindsight, the B's probably should have traded out of the #2 spot once Taylor Hall was taken - it would have been difficult to do as Seguin was a true can't-miss prospect and the only reason not to take him would be that he might not be a great fit for your system and his maturity (at age 19) is suspect.

That said, I think Seguin was shopped to the whole league although I'm sure the B's preferred that he go out of the conference or at least out of the division. Does anyone know if anyone else besides the Stars put together a decent package? Once you saw what came over for Seguin, were there any teams (or fanbases) that said, "Dang, we coulda put together a better package and shoulda traded for Seguin ourselves."'

Minnesota is in a complete tailspin. I don't know how they right the ship. Suter, Parise, everyone in locker room interviews sounds completely defeated, have never been in such a slump and have no idea how to fix it.

I'm not sure what actually righted the ship here. Without Rinne last season, we were completely lost. Poile did an awful job of supplying back-ups and we paid for it. The Neal trade really surprised me, I was shocked that Poile would trade "Predator Way" type players away.

I have no idea how Minnesota has ended up the way it has. I guess with Yeo losing his mind, he may have lost the locker room.

I've read/heard (can't remember which) that it was the goaltending. That probably means trading for a veteran #1 of someone out of the playoff picture or maybe someone in the playoff hunt would give up a backup if they have depth at the position.

Well, they were playing like this long before the "meltdown" that is highly over-rated/reported. Crap like that happens all the time, just maybe not so openly. Coach is the easiest change, maybe not the most effective.

It is goaltending. The problem is that Kuemper is their goalie for the future. Thing is, that future was supposed to be in a couple years, not this year. Backstrom is not what he used to be. Not sure the best thing is to give away the future to try and "save" this season, which looks lost at this point - as far as playoffs are concerned.

I know, at least here, that there was almost no mention of it during the broadcast of the game. The only way I knew of it was seeing a link on one of the Nashville blogs. And I know the feeling with goaltending. We're spoiled with Rinne, but we have no depth behind that. We've only gotten one quality start (Sv. % above 85.0) out of a back-up all season. And those guys were all we had last season.

At least you're scoring and winning games.

Both my Kings and Canucks are not doing that well in both those departments.

Canucks need more depth behind defense. I honestly think that lack of scoring isn't the main problem.

They're not scoring because most of those forwards are busy trying to play defense because the actual defensemen aren't doing their bloody jobs properly AHEM AHEM COUGH COUGHEDLERBIEKSACOUGH...

Once the D is stable, then the forwards can resume their task of scoring.

Bruins beat Tampa 4-3 with 2 more goals from the 18 year old Czech Pastrnak. More importantly, this was the first game this season that the Bruins showed some appropriate snarl after being poked. It took more time than I prefer, but it looks like the B's have found their identity and are finally playing at the level that they should be. Another tough test coming up with the Rangers and unlike Tampa who was on the 2nd game of a back to back, the NYR will be coming in after a day off.

The B's have to decide whether or not to keep Pastrnak in the NHL, I think they have to keep him here even though it means they burn a year off his entry-level contract, he knows how to score and the B's need scorers.

Have you guys seen this Pastrnak kid? Back to back 2 goal games playing on the B's top line. Look at this goal - kid looks like the real deal. I hope they don't send him back down to avoid the 1st year of his contract kicking in. He's got 2 more games until they decide. If they keep clicking, he probably stays, but who knows.

I love the kid - he was an excellent pick at #25 in last years draft. The B's had a couple lean years in the draft except for Seguin at #2 and Hamilton at #9 (which are so high, you really shouldn't screw up); too early to tell but so far OK is Malcom Subban (#24 overall) PK's goaltending little brother. Pastrnak has soft hands and terrific goal scoring instincts. The only knock on him is that he is small - 167 pounds - so the B's are concerned about his ability to take the punishment doled out at this level. He is playing so well that he is making it easy for the B's to just decide to keep him with the big club and leave him on the first line.
