2014-2015 NHL Regular Season Thread

The dogfight continues in the Pacific. I'm lovin' this as there are so many more games that interest me now. Tonight we got LA/Rangers that should be fantastic and right after that one, Canucks/Jets, of particular interest to me not only because of the implications for the Flames, but for the soft spot in my heart I have for the Jets and their fans.

You've heard the expression of hanging on by a thread. Well, the only thing that B's fans are hanging onto as far as hope the team can turn around the 5-game winless streak is a hair. Or more accurately, the lack of hair on the players' heads. Every single Bruin volunteered to have their hair cut for charity in their annual Cuts for a Cause fundraiser. The last time that happened the B's won the Stanley Cup - sort of a reverse Sampson effect if you will. In the intervening years, there were always a few players who opted to make a sizeable contribution rather than sacrifice the flowing locks.

The charity work is admirable and they raised over $130,000 which is a good thing even if the B's miss the playoffs; however, if the Boston Not-so-Fuzzy Bears climb back into the playoffs, that would be even better.

I'm kinda' concerned with what I'm seeing with the Flames the last couple of games. They're having trouble moving it out of their zone, trouble moving and keeping it in the O zone, and starting to take more penalties. I think that the pressure of having to win every game against stiff competition is starting to take it's toll with these guys - lack of experience is starting to show. They did their usual comeback routine after falling behind 2-0 to the Stars last night, losing in a SO. The point puts them 1 ahead of LA, but I feel they really needed the 2 going into Minnesota Friday - a game that is going to be really tough. A key difficult game has become even more so now.

I wasn't expecting the Flyers to roll up Chicago like they did. Timonen was welcomed back by the fans, but the Flyers showed him what's up.

Playoff pushes in both conferences are making for a nice end to the season. While I am not a Bruins fan, it would be weird to not have them in the playoffs. I think they'll make it. As for San Jose, weird not having them in too, but I think they are done for this season.

Wow, it doesn't get any easier - I just saw that after the Wild they're into Nashville for a Sunday afternoon game. Historically, they don't do very well in those afternoon tilts.

We've been really good the last two outings, hopefully we can steamroll through the next few games and into the playoffs. Tampa will be a big test tonight. We're still missing a few key pieces, and how the youngsters step up the plate tonight will be telling. Saturday against Washington will be a pretty big game, too. I imagine Trotzy wants some revenge against the old club, as his visit to Nashville didn't go well. A couple more wins, and we could take home the regular season crown. A couple losses would limp us into the playoffs. Fortunately, we should be in all of the remaining games this season, and a lot of them are at the Tire Barn, where we've been unstoppable.

RANGERS! Officially 1st team to lock in a playoff bid!

Dominating with a back up goalie. This is scary.

NYR completely dominated. Got that rookie goalie bounced, shut down 6 penalties, and had zero power plays (as if that could have helped them).

For what seems to be the 10th time this year, the B's snatched a tie out of the mouth of a victory. A last minute goal by Anaheim tied it up (not without some controversy as it did look like goalie interference to Bruins fans, announcers, coaches and Rask - if any neutral observers saw it, please post your take on it). That said, the B's are not in a position where they should be leaving games in the hands of officials, they finally played with the intensity that their situation demands which is encouraging and they probably deserved better than an OT loss; but they didn't grab the win when it was there for the taking so they have to take responsibility for leaving that point on the ice and play a little better against the Rangers on Saturday afternoon (it is a national game if anyone is interested - NHL network).

Now they are tied with the Sens (thank you, Rangers!), but the Sens have a game in hand (against the Leafs, no less, ugh). This looks like it will come down to the wire.

Well, finally some good news. Just checked the league wide +/- stats, and look who is number one, two and three? Why, it's Kessel, Bozak and JVR! Oh wait, I started at the bottom....
That's right, the three worst +/- stats are....the Leafs number 1(?) line!
