Back when this Spiro thread started, I had weichs on. I was happy. But then I succumbed, like it seems a lot of us do, to experimenting with strings again

It’s literally taken me years and lots of string changes to fully accept the fact that overall, Spiros are the string for this bass - for everything, pizz n arco. All this with the least amount of compromises.

Hey, the bass likes Spirocores! It’s as simple as that.

Flat side is toward the tailpiece. As it should be?

You got into my head about this a little bit, because I did install the Yamahiko, but afterwards I had the bridge reshaped by a very well respected local luthier, who (I think) would have caught my mistake.

Yep, I still have the weichs on…

Hang on a second, I've just been through the whole thread and was updating the board, since we're entering the final month of the challenge. I had you as out.

I got back from 5 weeks overseas (managed to see a solo improvised show from the amazing Dion Nijland at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam) and for ***** and giggles put the belcanto G back on. It didn’t last long and the weich went back on. I actually found it harder to start under the bow and I think my old French bass is quite dark so the brighter spiro seems to be a better fit. So for now the weichs are a still a stayer…

I'd say that was a violation of the original rules (below)...but I am just one vote.

To play:
You have to start the year with a full set of Spirocores (no guest G string) and commit to them for the year.
You can change or even mix gauges as long as all of the strings are Spirocores.
You can replace your old Spirocores with newer or different Spirocores.
But, no trying anything else (on your bass) for even one gig. You may not, for any period of time, have a string on your bass that isn't a Spirocore.
If you slip, you have to self-report and you're out, but how long you made it will be on record.

Congrats on seeing the light, coming home, admitting the error and re-committing.

Hey

If you read that carefully you’ll see that the belcanto G went on for 5 mins and the weich 3885 G went straight back on… does that count?

this is a hard call but per the rules I would count you as out. The point of the challenge is IMO to force you away from temptation to try other strings. A way to say to yourself "however i need to sound or play i can get with spirocores". I say you're out. I would've been ok with it per the line saying "no trying anything on your bass for even one gig" but it continued to "...for any period of time". And because it wasn't say, a string breaking and you having to throw a belcanto on to finish a gig I don't see a way around it. I'm sorry but congrats on almost 11 months....
