3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

Oh man, pretty excited to hear more examples / thoughts on the Chromatron! So far I have owned a white 3 knob Proton, Groove Regulator, Fromel Wonderlove, and Purple/Orange Wonderlove V2. They have each been good.

If I'm honest, it has been a few minutes since I have had a 3 Leaf filter. Just recently I had an Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe and before that the Glou Glou Rendezvous. The Glou Glou has set the bar for me for envelope filters on bass. It was the fattest, juiciest, most versatile filter (also the most expensive!! ) I have ever had. Ultimately I had to sell that because of the large amount of pedalboard real estate it took up. Hoping the Chomatron will fit the bill.

Just out of curiosity, I know there are not many of the Glou Glou out there, but does anyone out there also have experience with them and the 3 leaf stuff?

I owned an original GR1. I really dug that pedal. I sold it and all of my other pedals at one point. When I got back into the pedal game I bought a Proton. The Meatball thing was more for me than the Mutron thing, so I bought a Wonderlove. It always sounded cleaner and brighter with more of a filter emphasis up top than the GR’s meatier sound. The Chromatron is a different thing than either. It’s definitely fatter than the WL with a filter action that I can only describe as “greasier.” I’m pretty sure I like the Chromatron more, but more testing will be required.

Sorry for my unchecked ramblings...

I just put the Chromatron through its paces with the rest of the pedals on my board. It’s a winner. I definitely like it more than the WLD. I like the filter’s action more, I like the tonal focus more, and I like the resonance control a lot more. The Chromatron also doesn’t do that weird wobbly thing that the WLD would occasionally do when played with aggressive vibrato. To my ears it’s simply a better pedal, and the WLD was already awesome.

How do you feel it reacts to the rest of your effects? From your clip and seeing your board I think we have similar intentions with and taste in filters so I'd love to know more of what you think.

It works well with the rest of my stuff. My Tim tuned Octabvre seems to pair with it more smoothly than the WLD since the Chromatron’s focus feels more squarely in the midrange, and the Octabvre has tons of mids to push on its own. My Pike Vulcan makes it open more quickly, so nothing really new there, but obviously still a good tool for the arsenal. I have my Doom in the Chromatron’s loop and set for more of a mid-gain synth thing than all out fuzz. For that it works really well. The octave up portion of the Doom isn’t quite as pronounced with the Chromatron as it was with the WLD, but it’s still plenty present. I also have an Analogman Mini Chorus and a Strymon blueSky, neither of which are used much, if ever, with an envelope filter.

Thanks for your review. Love my WL ver. 1 and if the Chromatron unseats that, it will be a superb filter. How did you get yours so soon?
