3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

I kind of wish Spencer could do what Chase Bliss has done most recently with their direct sales. They open up an enrollment period, anyone who wants a pedal preorders and will eventually receive a pedal. Then (however Chase Bliss decides to close the preoder period....whether parts availability or not wanting to push orders out past a certain amount of months) they close the preorder window. So at least if you are an avid follower of their work and jump on, you will get a pedal.

It's sounds like Spencer has had a lot of difficulty sourcing some parts and stuff like that so maybe a model like this wouldn't work. But let me tell you, it was just so nice ordering a Generation Loss mk II and knowing that even if I got pushed to another batch, I was going to be receiving one. It also killed the scalpers and their $1000 sales on the original Chase Bliss/Cooper FX collab. and those went to what maybe reasonable prices of some nice Chase Bliss history should be.

This is an awesome idea. Joel should just collab with Spencer to manufacture 3Leaf pedals.

Wow, so a 30% markup is considered reasonably priced these days?

Some general things here have gone up more than that. It will depend on many factors, how much other component prices have gone up and so on. With general cost of living prices rising, it would also mean the time factor cost would increase. It really just depends, it is not like the price is going to go down. :)

i dunno brother but i guess i was a big sucker to pay 400 for my Doom 1 and 750 for my chromatron at reverb. plus taxes. yes it was a mistake for for me to fuel more stupid prices at reverb but at that time i was new to the 3leaf game and all i wanted was to have one in my board. yes i learned. now am i gonna sell this at TB for the same amout i got it for? ABSOLUTELY NO! i respect TB and my fellow tbers. if ever decide to move it i would rather trade for a pedal i can use like a dcx bass or something thats easiily obtainable that i can use .i cant take advantage of my fellow tbers. Pedals are just material things i would rather have integrity than stuff that i can live without. Cheers!

I miss my first gen Doom, in some ways I preferred it over the Doom 2

the doom 1 is a great pedal on its own and easy to dial in as well. i had no regrets paying it at a premium and i totally understand the rverb seller (infact its a fellow tber too but no need to name names) as i had alot of gigs that i was able to use it for. and alot of people has heard our music. for me, Thats enough to know the real value of it. Thank you sir. the doom still resides in my board and will continue to do so … at least for now. Cheers!

But…component prices don’t impact someone buying something built for $300 and then selling it for $400…the seller is raising prices due to market. The market is our challenge…it isn’t Spencer’s e-commerce practices. It’s the fact that you can buy the pedal and quickly make $100 on it meaning that even if you have good intentions (not like that matters), you’d be doing someone a service by only making $100 when selling the pedal…so…um…therefore now you see why it sells out in 1 second. If you actually want one this is your only chance to not get raked over the coals and if you don’t actually want one but happen to be fast on the click you can now make $100 easily without much effort…which then explodes the demand against the suplpky even worse.

Now does it make sense why I say that TB and me and you are all part of the problem. It isn’t whatever e-commerce platform spencer is using.

That looks like a fun board

Gosh…
Please, stop blaming those that paid a high price on the secondary market. None of the buyers actually want to pay that much.

But is there an alternative to these prices for discontinued products ?

No. You either pay or miss.

Don’t get me wrong, I loathed paying 800ish for a Chromatron but I had no other choices if I wanted one.
It is SO easy to blame those who pay the full price when you guys had had the chance to have one for less.
Blame the sellers

I hear you, but the FOMO doesn't change the facts. The more buyers are willing to pay for discontinued products, the more sellers will push their price higher and higher. I don't blame you for wanting a Chromatron, and I'm happy that you got one, but being undiscerning about the price that you paid for it does hurt the market of seeking buyers at large. And while I don't condone the arguments that have flaired up about such things, I do understand why seeking buyers feel like such "high buyers" have done them a disservice, even if unintentional.

It's not "the buyer's fault", but you cannot ignore the role of the buyer in this issue. In order for the seller to sell at an exorbitantly high price, the buyer has to buy at an exorbitantly high price. This is true even if we can put the onus on the seller not to list for a stupidly high price.

100%. And the argument could be made that it is 50% the fault of buyers, because they confirm/reinforce the increased (and increasing) market values. People cite the few reverb sellers holding items at the same high prices for months/years as the norm. (i.e. This is just the price and they won't budge.) The reality is, they're the exception, and all the sellers who actually have an interest in moving gear would lower the prices until they start reaching equilibrium with what buyers will spend. This isn't a gasoline monopoly where you have to pay ridiculous prices or you can't commute to work, get groceries, and survive. Nobody is losing their livelihood by holding out on buying an overpriced pedal.

On that note, it's not like 3Leaf pedals were flooding the market when he was at peak production. Sure, you may have seen some protons or wonderloves sitting for a few weeks in the classifieds from time to time, but the prices were reasonable. That's because people weren't overhyping them, and FOMO was not in the picture because another run of his current lineups seemed inevitable. Even when hype started to build about the then-discontinued GR2 after he was on to the Wonderlove Deluxe, the most those would go for was was maybe $225ish.

One other point about that, the pushing of prices (reinforced by buyers saying 'yes' to those prices) pulled flippers into the 3Leaf market. When buyers were not willing to pay insane amounts for these pedals, there was no motive for 'middle men' to hop in and try to make a quick buck. So the insistence that "I need this now at any price" completely opens the door to that, on top of raising the prices asked by folks who owned them simply for personal use.

In my mind it boils down to it being a luxury good. Nobody with a 3Leaf pedal on their board (myself included) would perish and fail to play music well if these pedals all spontaneously combusted. We'd find suitable replacements and carry on. So there's no argument that anyone has to pay exorbitant prices for these.

Sellers have a total monopoly.
300 were produced, and most of them are not for sale.

You can’t apply a market logic where buyerS and sellerS react to one an other with such few transactions with such few supply.

There’s no market equilibrium price. The end price is what a single buyer is willing to pay for a single unit, and it stands as a precedent.

Of course buying one at a high price is an incentive for future sellers to list theirs at a similar or higher price : that’s the monopolistic tyranny.

But if you really want one, and not a different pedal, what are your options ? Waiting forever to see one pop at the original MSRP and see it gone in a minute ? You might end up seeing them selling for a grand or $1500 and regret not getting one when they were selling for 600.

I like where you’re going guys, but would you actually sell one for the MSRP knowing they sell for $700-800?
Ahah. Nope. At the end of the day, I bet most of you would still list it at the highest amount someone is willing to pay for it.

Again, I totally agree with you. Buyers should not buy. But that’s a very comfortable statement when you already have multiple 3Leaf pedals sitting at home.

If 3 Leaf is a luxury item, buyers’ interest would grow as the price rises.
I am not sure that’s entirely the case.

3 Leaf pedals are identified as the best in their categories by numerous bass players. That’s where the interest comes from IMO. The lack of substitute is the reason behind the increase in demand, that is fueled by the limited release.
If I want the functionality of a Doom2, what can I get ? Well, a Doom 2. Hahah.

I could be wrong, but other pedals that have functional substitutes (compression, preamp, for example) are less demanded.
You can’t get a Pwnzor ? Ok. What about a cali76 or Empress bass comp ? You won’t lose much not having a 3 Leaf pedal this time.

I am interested in your opinion on this.
