3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

Well, I had the wonder love (gr2 and lastest version), proton and the tru-tron. After a long couple of days of testing, I kept the proton and tru-tron. What I found in a nutshell for was this-
I got the sound I wanted from both 3-leafs, so I keep the proton. There is a mojo about the tru-tron that is most definitely funky. The pre-on it works really well, so I don't need an additional drive. Don't let the size fool ya, I have a nano board with a 3-leaf pwnzor, corona chorus, tru-tron and a chameleon power supply. You will need a 12v power supply for the tru-tron, hence I use the chameleon. Works perfectly.

It all boils down to just playing them for yourself. What you do on your gig, your bass and your sound. All three will give you the mu sound. So the proton is easy, the gr2 was versatile, the tru-tron has the mojo. For me that is.

From the user manual 1 pager:

Power The Enabler runs on a standard 9v DC, center-negative power supply (the type that 90% of pedals use). You can use a 12v DC supply for extra headroom. DO NOT USE ANYTHING ABOVE 12 VOLTS DC. The Enabler generates a negative supply voltage internally for over 20 volts of headroom from a standard power supply. The Enabler can draw up to 300mA of current when the headphone amp is in use, so make sure to use a power supply rated at 300mA or greater.

I've always wanted to try an Enabler. How does it sound with head phones vs let's say running it through an interface? I've used a Presonus (clipped like crazy) and an M Audio (sound ok, but lots of low end loss). Obviously I know these are different, I'm just curious.

Or my little Acoustic amp has a head phone jack, but it sounds terrible.

I would rate it at better than my USB interface alone, like much better, below what a Phil Jones Amp/Bass Buddy will give you, but pretty close.

Thanks!
I really like the small size and simple control layout of the proton but feel that the tru-tron feels more like the 'real thing' and I have always tried to avoid clones when ever possible...then again, the proton does look good and the clips sound really good too...well.

Its really more noticeable when just using the headphone output, it sounds much clearer with my headphones. I originally tried it to see if it could clear up and push more volume through my headphones, and I think it worked. But I dont think it really makes a difference on the normal amp output, seems to have the same sound at 9v vs 12v.

Thanks. Cleaner is good...!!!!

Through a good set of over-ear (circumaural) headphones with a large driver or a set of custom molded monitors, the headphone amp on the enabler is very good. That being said, I run into a Rolls PM50 via the XLR in and it's pretty true to my instrument tone.

Has anyone here compared the proton wit the Mu-FX Tru-Tron 3X ?
I am tempted to get the proton but at the same time curious to see what Mr.Beigel might be releasing next...
Advice welcome!

I got both.. Both sounds great, you won't go wrong with either one, if you're fine with bigger package, 12v AC power and original mojo.. Tru-tron is your choice while Spenser's proton can do almost the same sounding at smaller package and more friendly power requirement.
