70's reissue Jazz Bass

So has anyone played one yet?

Yep. Got it late last week. Played it all weekend. I will try and post some sound clips if I can get to it this evening. Having never played a real vintage 70s jazz in many years, I cannot really say how it compares. All I have had was 2 different MIJ/CIJ '75 RIs and an older Geddy Lee.

As of right now, I really like it. It looks awesome, that's for sure. It also plays great. I have actually not tweaked a single thing since unpacking it out of the box. It does indeed have the same quality "Fender" stamped Schaller tuners that come on the MIA 75 RI. Although the neck has a gloss finish, it feels great to me. It is just like the finish on my MIM Classic 50's Precision which I love.

If I HAD to come up with some negatives......this is just nitpicking

1. The headstock logo is not very accurate to me.
2. The binding is super white. I wish it was more toned down...off-white or something.
3. They used a plain 4 bolt neckplate. I do not care about them not using the typical 3 bolt plates, but it would have been cool to at least have the 4 bolt plate with the 'F' on it.
4. On mine, the bridge is actually installed a little off-center which casues the strings not to lineup with the pickup poles. I will be correcting this when I install a Badass bridge since you can file the saddles slot wherever you want.

I really do not care about any of those things. I personally think this will start getting rave reviews just like the rest of the Fender Classic Series. Fender is really putting out a great product at a great price point with these MIM Classic Series basses.

Again, I hope to post some un-EQ'd un-effected sound clips later this evening so you can hear for yourselves. I am not good at conveying the sound of pickups in words.

Can you please post a picture of the wrong string lineup? (including pole pieces)
Have you tried to align the neck, unscrewing it and trying to adjust it properly? This may fix the problem.
Fender had and has this problem for many years, can you please add more attention? :p
Regarding the white binding, the maple is also very white, so maybe they didn't want to give the bass a tinted look.
Regarding the plain neck plate, you can upgrade it :p

Subscribing. Can't handle the GAS pains. Anyone have these in stock and available for sale?

HERE is one for sale on ebay if you want the black one. This is the same seller I bought mine from. They also listed another sunburst after I bought mine but it has sold, too. They shipped it right out and I had it in about 2 days. $699 no taxes or shipping!!!!!!

I should start this by first saying that I'm glad so many people have found Fenders they like. But what amazes me is that so many on here have bashed the MIA RI/hot rod fenders for being over priced(I admit they are getting out of hand) but you will except poor craftmanship and not even blink. A bridge that is not centered? And the general response is "it's an easy fix". Fix? FIX? Action/truss/saddle adjustment sure, that is to be expected on any new bass...but an off center bridge? Are you kidding? This is like bass building 101...and exactly the reasion why the slightly highter price of the MIA is worth it. And if it is truly off center send it back! It's their problem to fix, not yours. You just plunked down 700 + of your hard earned dollars for a bass that is sub-standard! Don't let you gas blind you. Would you except this on any other bass? I sure wouldnt. I own a MIA 75 RI and a 08 Hot Rod, and 2 vintage 70's USA Fenders(a 76 and a 73, both jazz). And I can tell you with out hesitation that if either of the USA Fenders had a bridge that was not centered I would have taken them back. Again I'm truly gald Fender has made a bass that so many of you are gassin' for but please don't buy a bass that is poorly made just for the sake of gas. Again just MO.

Amen bro, I'm glad you said what needed to be said! The '08 Hot Rod bashing needs to stop.... no owners are unhappy with 'em, LOL. My Hot Rod was perfect straight outta the case, even the intonation was dead on.

Demand quality, even at $700, and you'll get it!!

That's why I asked him to post a pic, maybe it's not that off-centered... And maybe it's because the neck was not tightened well.... (maybe)!

I think you're talking about neck shift. He can loosen the bolts and shift the neck either toward the E or G by yanking on the headstock.

Unless the bass has a really bad neck pocket fit, the difference will not be very noticable. And, if he's not careful, he could damage the finish at the joint, or worse... crack wood!

Well, I will check out the neck aliignment tonight. Either way, It plays great the way it is. To me, I would rather keep it the way it is than return it (possibly at my expense), be without a bass for however long it takes to get another one. No other retailers seem to have them at this point. It could be a long wait.

The '08 Hot Rod bashing needs to stop....

FWIW - I went back and looked at every post in this thread and I cannot find anyone bashing ANY basses at all. So I am not sure what that has to do with this thread.

Looks nice!

Yeah.. pretty nice lookin' if you ask me. This about makes up for not being able to import look alike Japanese basses any longer. Pricing is $1049.95 with street expectations of around $700. Bingo, right on the money too!

That's a fair price, considering what it would cost to build up something with blocks and binding and 70s spacing.

(cough)..( cough) 4 pages and 77 post later and no mention that the Classic Series 70s Jazzes have the modern 10-hole pickguard pattern not the 1970s 11-hole pattern ;). What is under the pickguard? Did Fender forget the 11th screw hole? :hmm: I prefer the look of 70s Jazz bass without the pickguard.

For $700, I'd buy the bass and then go get a new pg and "F" neck plate.

Glad to read that it has the proper tuners. They didn't look quite right to me.

I agree 100% on the decal. I don't know what Fender was thinking there, but it's something that can probably be corrected with the correct decal and some time.

I also noticed that the didn't get rid of the skunk stripe.

Well, I haven't managed to do any sound clips yet but did take some new pics.

I'll try and snap a pic under the guard soon.

In the meantime, here is a sound clip. I could not think of anything to record so I just stole the lick from Invalid Link Removed (If you've been there before, you'll recognize it. If you have not been there, you need to check it out). I plugged the bass directly into the 1/8 inch input on my mac. There is no EQ and no effects.

Lick 1 - Bridge 10, Neck 10, Tone 10 (everything cranked)
Lick 2 - Bridge 10, Neck 9, Tone 10 (the neck pup rolled down a tad)
Lick 3 - Neck Only, Tone 10
Lick 4 - Bridge Only, Tone 10
Lick 5 - very short Jaco thing same setting as lick 4.

I have never tried a file on this linkup site. Let me know if it does not work.
