8x10 - Why?

4 x 10's give you 40 inches of moving speaker. A single 15 is just that. 15 inches of moving speaker. Won't move as much air as a 4 x 10. An 8 x 10 yields 80 inches of moving speakers. That's why they are THE bass cabinet. For the record, I own and use compact cabinets, but they just don't get that sound that I hear in my head. the 8 x 10 definately produces the exact sound I want.

A great bass player, maybe.... not so great at math, an 8X10 is a great cabinet. It will still need to be Bi-amped if you want your 8@11$ to rattle
 
How is it getting up on a stage with no stairs? I haven't used mine live yet but will in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I can fit the thing in the back seat of my Buick LeSabre! It isn't as deep as my SWR Big Ben and that fits no problem.

I think a lot of people dont realize this until they get to the gig, but this is precisely what makes carting an 810 around better than carrying a 210 or 410.

First you place the back of the cab against the stage, and depending on the height of the stage and your preference, you tilt it back and lift from the floor and slide it on its back onto the stage, or just get on stage, lean the cab against the stage and pull on the bar on top and drag it up on to the stage.

The stage bears most of the weight and by doing it this way you never have to strain yourself by carrying your cab over your center of gravity. Its much to slide the cab against the stage than to really carry it.

Its not really big enough a place to justify the amount of gear we use, but then again our friends and fans wouldnt have it any other way. We get tons of compliments on our wall-o-sound approach.

Thanks for that response. I should note that I just bought a padded cover from Larry Lecover, a really nice cover that fits snug and doesn't cover the wheels in the back. I just wonder how this will affect sliding the cabinet as it doesn't have openings for the skid rails in the back. Guess I'll find out next week if I can fit the thing in the back of my car!
 
re the earlier math challenge, for single drivers, approximate area values not accounting for diff between edge of speaker and edge of rim are:
10 inch pi r ^2 = 78.54
12 inch = 113.1
15 inch = 176.71

So, a 4x10 has way more surface area. Now having said that, the 15 will likely be capable of lower frequency response.

Depends which 15 and which 10. Most 15s that I have used (not Accugroove) get lots of low mid response, and lots of 10" loaded cabs I have heard actually reproduce a low fundamental better than a 15" loaded cab. There are always exceptions though.

Actual measurement - Sd in the T-S parameters - from Em drivers are:

54.26
80.52
132.68

But that alone means very little. Multiply it times what excursion the driver is capable of and it means a little more. Factor in the driver's sensitivity and actual thermal and mechanical power handling and it means more yet.

Also, a lot of good 15s are more sensitive, can handle more power per driver and have a longer excursion. The thing wrong with fifteens for most modern bass cab needs are that they start beaming at a lower frequency and thus really need a midrange driver to give more content in the upper mids.

Things aren't as cut and dried as some would want them to be. It really depends on a lot of factors including the actual driver specs and not just the diameter.

I think that's why people like Accu and Berg started throwing in 6" drivers and such into large-cone cabs, like the NV215 and Whappo & Jr., etc.
Makes a difference for sure.
 
It all comes down to getting your sound in a given playing situation. If I were playing in a loud rock band and had a few roadies at my disposal, I wouldn't use anything but the big stuff like 8x10 cabs. In the past I've use a 4x10 on top of 1x15 and that was my favorite combination for a loud stage setup. There is just something about having big cabs that gives me the attitude for the music. But, these days I do a lot of playing in a duo with a guitar player and a drum machine (sorry). He uses a 35 watt 1x12 guitar amp and the PA has like a 6" and a tweater in each speaker. My bass cab (Accu Jr.) carries most of the drum machine as well as the bass. It wouldn't make much sense to use an 8x10 fridge in this type of venue. For this I need a full range bass cab that can also handle regular music played through it on the breaks. Bass gear is like construction equipment, use the right tool for the job.

Note that only the drums and amps fit on the stage and what the guitarist are running and how it dwarfs my 8x10 rig. Also, the guitarist are running those amps hard and the crowd is right behind us on the floor. This isnt a bar gig where a band fills in for the jukebox, this is a bar gig where the fans come specifically to have their faces melted.

Seriously I hope you guys have some hearing protection - I lost most of the hearing in my left ear after standing 3' in front of a really loud backline for five years - ten years ago.
