My first one was a fretless Lakland Hollowbody with two Dark Stars. Frankly, I didn't like it. My ideal fretless sound is something like Jaco meets Mark Egan. Lots of buzzy upper mids. The Dark Star has less mids than most other pickups (to be fair, most other pickups over accentuate mids - so it's not that Dark Stars have LESS mids - it's that most other pickups have TOO MANY mids). To my ears, I don't care for the Dark Stars on a fretless.
Second bass was a Lakland Decade. That bass was passive and absolutely KILLED! Great sound. Played beautifully. Several TBers got to play it at a NYC GTG several months ago.
Now I have the US Glaub. Quality is just ridiculous. Finish is beautiful, neck is super fast, and I've never seen better fretwork. There can be a *smidge* of hum with a single Dark Star like this, but it's not enough to both anyone. LOTS of tones from Jaco burp to Bill Laswell dub thump. Excellent instrument all the way around.

Its quite the Collectors Lakland if Laklands are collectable.
S#5003 5594 Quilt top on ash 34" scale. Yes, a rare 34" scale Lakland 5594, only the first 31 were 34" and Dan hasn't built one since. These older ones also have a number of different features then the later ones, one being the small pickups which many love! They sound quite different then the later pickups. I've had some killer old Laklands in the past...

I've been looking for a 55-02 for a while...sweet. I think you'll dig it lots. I played a frineds at a blues jam a few months back and have had my eyes out for one ever since...

I used to have a Cherryburst 55-01 over Ash... Maple board, barts. What a fantastic bass... i loved it

sweet bass brian.i had one very similar to that a few years ago(35 in scalt though.)you get all the cool basses.
as for the duncand,dan told me lakland was not going to use them at all anymore because people didnt seem to like them.seems like several ive talked to favor the duncans.
