A Little Roscoe Fun

Ooh, I like. Any chance you can get an updated shot when it's roughly cut out before shaping, or even just laying the template on there now? I can see the pencil marks in spots but would like to see exactly how it fits on the body shape.

I have just been thinking lately that I want to get my hands on a RMLE and there's no question it'll be a Century 5 when I do.

Hey, Jeff - Gard came through like a champ! It looks like a bass!

Thanks, Mark. Yeah, this isn't our first rodeo with this, unfortunately. Shipping overseas is a crap shoot every time, and there's NO protection to the merchant (us). Domestically, as long as we ship to the billing address and can confirm delivery at that address, then we're covered. But there's no such verification system in place for international sales. We have to take the risk, though, otherwise we'd be out of business in a heartbeat. US sales alone don't get us there like they used to...

I have a high school buddy who is an FBI agent in their internet fraud group. We had an incident involving a Singapore shipping address a few years ago. My buddy actually built up an entire case (involving many other online fraud incidents also originating in Singapore) and he took it to Singapore and, along with the US attaché there, presented it to some muckety-mucks in the Singapore government. The Singapore government folks denied it all the way, which initially really bugged my FBI buddy. Until the attaché explained (after the meeting) that the individuals responsible would be found and terminated with extreme prejudice by the Singapore government. These are the same folks who cane you if you spit your gum on the sidewalk. :)

I felt pretty good with that result. I never heard exactly what happened, but I had pleasant dreams about justice being served.

The fretless was really sad news Greg. Nobody deserves that. Especially decent people trying to make a living. I'm from Singapore and I'm the guy that's buying the roscoe century standard 5JJ. Not to make Singapore sound like some up-tight, prison state but I'm pretty sure with the amount of law enforcement going on, those guys who cheated you can't get away with what they did.

I honestly never thought that I would get the amount of use out of my fretless that I actually am. It's been coming with to every gig all summer, and is used on several songs per night.

And that's why I'm holding out a bit - that and finances and a other issue.

When I had my fretless it was all I had while waiting for my fretted to be built. I used it for everything. I got pretty good over those months. I could play it like a fretted or bring on the mwah when appropriate. That makes it much more versatile than a fretless. I RARELY slap so frets aren't really necessary as I play jazz and at church - both of which are great genres for fretless.

I even debated going fretless completely. I still do. Roscoe makes the best fretless, period. There have been a few people that have fretless throughout their careers.

I have been tempted to order a "dream" fretless (not a signature or anything, just a Standard Plus) and then selling the fretted to help pay for it and get a "solid" fretted (there are a couple good ones out there - not Roscoe good but good enough) for fill ins and situational playing.

Don't go thinking to much Steve. Every time that you do that you end up posting your Current Roscoe on the "For Sale" forum!:)

Just order the Roscoe fretless (and keep your fretted Roscoe) and leave it at that! :bassist:

We do enough variety that I couldn't get by with only a fretless. I NEED a good fretted bass (or 3). But I do really enjoy having my fretless in my arsenal, and it works great on several songs that we are currently doing. It's a ton of fun to play (now that I got my confidence level up), and it gets a sound that none of my fretted basses come close to. It may not be everyone's idea of what a fretless bass should sound like, but it completely nails the sound I had in my head when I ordered it.

If I were to have to get rid of two basses and keep two, the fretless would be one of them that would stay.

So, that's just a very long winded way of saying, keep your fretted Roscoe, and when finances allow, order your fretless.

I think that's what I'll do. We have taken steps that will allow us to reduce some "unsecured debt" at a rate 4x faster than we were. Using home equity, a fantastic interest rate due to Robin working at a bank, reduced health care deductions at work and a huge reduction in child care costs, I'm feeling pretty good about the future for a change. Baring any surprises - of course there will be one - I think we'll be sitting in a lot better situation very soon, possibly within a year or two.

If there's anything left in the "summer account" when school starts again, it's going to the "future fretless" account where it will await future windfalls to apply to an order for Greg sometime in the near future.

Fortunately the specs are easy as I'd basically be redoing the one that I let get away. I had intended to stick with a fretted/fretless pair of 5'a but when Jon had that "Jimmy 6" for sale I had to give it one last try. Thankfully with that I have decided that 6's are not for me and 5's are my comfort zone.
