I haven't read all the way through this thread but if you paid via PayPal, PayPal will get your back and take care of it. As long you didn't send the funds as a gift and the seller said everything was in working order.

Call PayPal ASAP.

I paid via PayPal, including shipping, then discovered that we were local to each other. We met half way. I know his name, phone # and address through paypal, and will try to let to powers that be deal with it.

Help from within :***: ??

paypal will not do this because they met up in person giving him a chance to inspect the product before purchase.

This isn't just a bad deal for OP, but for all of TB as well. I always tell my band mates how great the classifieds here are and how the feedback system does an amazing job of policing itself. I don't know of any other forum that has such a diverse open market of quality goods to buy, sell and trade without the hassle of fees or the flakiness of Craigslist and fleabay...I know we're the envy of many other forums in this regard. TB and it's classifieds are and will be invaluable to me so long as I continue to play bass. Every time someone is disingenuous and pulls a fast one, it makes the community look bad and makes it harder for the honest ones among us to sell, or worse, be trusting that we can go into a transaction with enough confidence that the seller will back up their word and stand by their item, or at the very least be up front about its condition and history.

I hope you get this sorted out, OP.

Whosoever told me that they thought he had deleted his account at 12 AM this morning obviously was in error in that case. He most certainly did delete the thread in the classified, though.
I expect that the seller would indicate that he deletes sale threads for items sold outside Talkbass, which in my opinion should be perfectly OK.

Forum is screwing with my quotes! I thought the OP said he did the deal through Reverb? So technically NOT a TB classifieds deal. But does it really matter. What can the mods do?
Allow me to clarify. I first saw the base here on TB, and messaged the seller. Then I discovered that it was on reverb also. I made the purchase through reverbs system for the extra layer of security, even though it cost me 50 more dollars to do so.

Paypal told me that the fact that I took delivery in person rather than having it shipped voided my PayPal buyer protection.

But in this particular case, there is enough he said / she said to keep me from jumping on the buyer's bandwagon. The buyer had opportunity to examine the bass prior to taking possession. The buyer screwed around with the neck and the truss rod and was inexperienced with truss rods.

You are incorrect. The buyer has already stated that he has talked to Paypal, and that they will not cover because he picked up in person.

I'd escalate the claim up the food chain, then. The "you picked it up in person" loophole isn't in any written policy I can find. In my experience, first level support at Paypal is generally useless.

But the seller represented to him that he had checked the rod and it worked fine............

Have you asked for where this "in person transaction" exemption to buyer protection is written in their policies? I've repeatedly had the 1st level of human support at Paypal make crap up to clear a case up quickly, only to have higher ups reverse the decision essentially admitting that the original decision was in conflict with the actual written policies. I wouldn't give up yet.

Also, did you make payment from a credit card or your paypal balance? If from your credit card, you can file a dispute with them, and CC companies are MUCH better to work with than Paypal. Paypal support's outcomes may as well come from a random number generator.

I always make major Paypal purchases from my credit card for this reason.
