A new respect for 15's....

I've been using Bag End 15s lately, and the end result is, I just sold my 410. I'm amazed at how loud these cabs are. One is sufficient for almost all my gigs, and when we play a louder outdoor venue, I use both.

I have a Combo 300 with a single 15" and it sounds really low-fi like a speakerphone almost. Not that bad, but it's like it has no high end and it's not very smooth. I really want to add a tweeter. I don't think 15's only could ever do it for me.

Don't ever base your opinion on something that broad on one piece of equipment, same goes for... well pretty much absolutely anything ever.

Some of those 1x15 Peavey are downright awful, but I've heard a couple of TNTs which have sounded really defined and had plenty of high end.

I always thought the 2x15 pair sounded clearer than an 8x10.
My friend has a pair of those Ampeg 1x15 that you described, and they do sound pretty good i thought.
Great for the tone that you are talking about too, and they can still get pretty aggressive for more edgy stuff.
And with an SVT head it is killer.

However my favorite 1x15 cabs are the DEEP bag end 1x15 cabs.. not the shallow cube ones, i think the model is S-15D-B.
I used to have 2 but not only have one.
The cab goes way deep in tone and has a very pleasing high end that extends pretty high for a 15 without being muddy or brash.. and its a fast sounding cab too.. but its large.. the cab is 24 inches deep.. a pair of them is just sick!

I like 15"s, but I really have no preferences. I like every size speaker for what it does as long as it's in a box that sounds good.

That's the key right there. A lot of folks focus more on the brand and the size of the speaker and not the cabinet they are choosing to stick those speakers in. I'm also a fan and user of the venerable 15 inch speaker.

I know I've posted this pic a lot, but speaking of 15' rigs that get the job done:cool:

Lost everything in the Calif fires. Am trying some new stuff this week. I hope it gets close to the sound of my Mesa Diesel 2x15. I think I'm gonna really miss it, but not the weight.

So sorry to hear about your misfortune. I hope that your family is safe and well and that you had enough insurance to get back what you lost.
In the 70's I used nothing but 15's and always built my own cabs using Electro-Voice specs and speakers. I usually used their EVM Series II 200 watt 15L drivers which were designed with a tighter cone for more midrange and were originally designed for guitar. But they had the same bass specs as the 15B which was strictly for bass. I used a pair of those cabs with the 15L's for a couple of years then built a couple more and put 15B's in them and used them as subs for the first pair.
Unbelievable sound. Used an Acoutic 301 for a head running at 2 ohms. Good "stadium" rig....lol I use nothing but 12's now but didn't start using them until the late 80's. There is nothing like a good 15 for bass and if I felt like hauling them, I'd build a couple more of those cabs. )-(

Mntngrown, I'm really sorry about all your losses in the fire. Hope everything comes out for you.
About the 15's....When this guy went on break I made a bee-line to talk with him about his sound. The Ampeg 115's were the stock 200 watt speakers that came in the cabs, no horns, strings were old DR Sunbeams, stock Fender pick-ups, tubes in the SVT were the orginals....ect. His abilities were good and solid, finger player, nothing fancy.... but what a room filling tone, lows were solid, highs were present, notes were crystal clear with all the way to the back of the room projection. Everything came together perfectly. Over the last 41 years I've heard some outstanding bass, but this was in the top two!

I traded an old Peavey guitar amp for an ampeg svt115 at a local pawn shop. I was playing through a 410hlf but thought it would be nice to have a small cab. I ended up taking it along to a show when we were pressed for space and LOVED it(with a v4bh). The cab was elevated and sounded just perfect.

Soon after, I decided I was going to buy another but ended up getting a svt210 instead. Now I wish I had just gotten another 115. I also recently got an nv610. I've been trying to sell my hlf on here recently with no luck. I may also try selling the 210 but it is so small, it is nice to have around.

If I get another 115, I'm going to have a hard time choosing between the 15s and the 610 (and between the v4bh and the svt2). I guess it is always nice to have options.

Just loaded a 3015 into a smallish slotport box to test it out. Driver came from the GFS so I wanted to be sure there wer no issues you understand and of course it sailed through with flying colors. :)

So's I put it on the floor under an Avatar 2x10 neo and powered it up with the YBA 200. Damn! Not bad at all. Im building up a slightly smaller version of the TL606 for it, sized to fit under the Avatar.

My other rig is a 2 by Bag End 2x15 stack powered by GK. Those Bag 15's are sweet! ...and talk about efficient. Gotta be careful with that head... size wise the Bag's are so small - maybe I need to refer to it as a "stackette" :D

so.......after reading this thread and thinking about mntngrown's misfortune, I came up with an idea.

I'm not having any luck selling my 410hlf. If he would want it and I could convince enough people to chip in, I would send it to him. If 20 people chipped in $20, that would be $400 minus $100 for shipping. I would net $300 which is probably below market but I would be helping another TB'er out.

If he doesn't want a 410 (he may well not want one as it sounds like he is a 15 guy), I would chip in $20 towards purchasing him a cab that someone else on here has for sale. If we could get enough people, we might be able to come close to raising the cash to buy him a new cab, head, and bass.

He may have insurance, but my experience with insurance is that you never come close to breaking even. At least this way he wouldn't have to worry about his bass gear.

Who is with me?????? What is $20 anyway? Soon you won't even be able to buy a gallon of gas for $20.

In all honesty if you were local I'd come by and check that cabinet out.

I like my Ampeg 15 - I can run it with or without the tweeter and more often than not I go without the tweeter - but it is paired with a Goliath II - so there you go kind of older school - but a good combo and I run one or both depending the need or the sound.

15's still BOOM!!
