I'll have to let those chips fall where they will.

I'm very respectful and considerate towards women, have been in a very long-term exclusive relationship with one, and have a number of women who consider me to be both their friend and a gentleman. I have no issue saying I find women to be attractive. And none of the women I know have ever had an issue with that. And trust me when I say none of them suffer fools gladly. And like me, they consider it both natural and healthy.

If somebody wishes to think my earlier comment to be sexist, about all I can think is: "So it goes." Some people are easily offended for reasons that have nothing to do with me. I don't hold myself responsible for them feeling that way.

As far as videos go, all I can say is that I (and I suspect many others here) could do far more to improve our bass playing by practicing and playing more than we already do. Speaking purely for myself, I've been playing bass for close to 50 years now, so instructional videos have a little less to offer me than they might somebody just starting out. Because after awhile, it all starts looking familiar. Probably because 90% of it is. But I'll still keep watching and studying just in case there's something I missed or didn't know about.

But that's me. What you see is what you get. ;)

I have a very good vision/opinion about Marta's playing. I'm being very diplomatic.

Just to be clear, this has nothing to do with being a fan of Marta, or how good she is at what she does. What's crap is the idea that you have to compose to be a "real bassist".

No, no, no, it's "true bassists". Real bassists are qualified much differently.

And no, he doesn't have many subscribers (but I don't think it is his channel)

I think you are trying to misinterpret my words, and here is why.
My comment was only and only a response to a very knowledgeable TB member's comment about "pirating" Flea's DVD; therefore,
I've asked a question if playing somebody else's creation/bass-line is, "kind of" pirating as well.
But...
I've never meant to say that only a composer could be a real bassist. Never!

It's the same thing when I posted a comment about two melons - not apples and oranges, some of our TB members decided to "abandon the ship" (and it's in the Winter)

I feel like this is the OPs MO, and the main reason why he's been on my ignore list off and on for a bit (and has now re-earned his rightful spot on it.)

1) Post a question like the OP here. A question with an answer everyone knows, but probably aren't 100% happy with.

2) Wait for comments.

3) Write multi paragraph responses, with intermittent words in all caps, raging against the people that answered his question with a common sense response.

He essentially asks common sense questions with the intent of ambushing the messengers that reply with the "obvious to everyone why" responses.

Sometimes he just does this in the comment section of other people's threads but it's generally always the same routine.

Because blaming his fellow bassists for a situation none of us created, somehow is the right answer. Or will somehow fix things.

Fun times eh?

You also have to keep in mind what it takes to get subscribers. There are many, many, many more factors on how to create a successful youtube channel. Sure, the things that you point out are factors (how helpful, how pretty, yadda yadda)...but there are so many other things to take into account when explaining how popular a channel is.

- how often are they putting out videos?
- what other social media are they on, and do they cross promote?
- how famous are they outside of youtube?
- How long have they been on youtube?
- how easy are their videos to find (keyword, search engine optimization, etc.)
- production quality of videos
- how much work are they really putting into gaining a following?
- What is their target audience?

I could go on and on ... there's a lot more to making a successful social media presence than just content.

Notice that this, ummm... not so good looking guy... has 187,000 subscribers himself. How does he pull that off?

My basic take is: if you look really good, that's great. If you play really well, that's great. If you're a really excellent teacher, that's wonderful.

None of the above three have anything to do with each other.

You get the looks you get.

You play as well as your talents, education, and dedication takes you.

If you teach well, that's a rare combination of awareness and communication that far fewer people posses than we might imagine.

None of the above have anything to do with, or are dependent on each other. So if I'm going to hand out praise or criticism, I'm going to create three separate and independent categories. And then judge each separately.
