About the Youtube subscriber count...

I've been running a youtube channel for many years, basically to chronicle my musical achievements, progress and technological experimentation. I do wish I had more of a following but there's not much point getting hung up on it.

Part of the issue is the youtube algorithms, which help determine whether certain videos or users rise above the sea of noise. If that does happen, there seems to be a snowball effect, where popularity leads to more popularity.

There does seem to be certain factors that really help. Controversial political topics is one, producing lots and lots of content seems to be another way of getting higher in the algorithms, and yes being an attractive woman is another big one.

Really though you can't be too bothered by it. Youtube provides a free video hosting service with a large audience. They also have a business model, they aren't there to vet content and give preferential treatment to educational content over everything else.

Probably my biggest peeve is the search ranking. Even if I try to search for my own content it can be hard to find. Therefore even when people are specifically searching for something, you may never gain traction and popularity. Ive never found a solution to that. The video tags section has never done much as far as I can tell.

it's very easy to say "she got more views/subscriptions because she's a pretty girl. but there are lots of other reasons a channel/player gets views and subscriptions.

the reason people get views and subscribers is partly because there are links to the videos from people who liked them, as well as recommendations, etc, for the channel. it's not always because it's a pretty girl - song choice has a lot to do with it, and the more popular songs and higher the rating, the more viewers each video will get from people who haven't heard of the player. more popular songs get many times the clicks. also consider how it's presented. i don't want a bunch of tab or notation on the screen to learn a song - give me the tab separately, please.

my favorite youtube bass tutorials are from constantine isslamow, definitely NOT a pretty girl but he's a great player.

showing how many subscribers he has and views this video has.

he offers a separate link to his notation on the newer videos, so i can focus on watching his hands when needed without distraction. oh, yeah, and then there's the question of how well and at what angle the player's hands are shown. btw, one of the reasons people heard of him is because there was a local newspaper article about his business that mentioned it. and every time anyone here asks for recommendations, i link to his channel just like this Constantine Isslamow

Concerned about a female bassist getting more subscribers than YOU feel may be deserved by her, because of some inherent bias that you harbor against women bass players, as exhibited by your pearl-clutching over the idea of so many folks subscribing to the videos. Like I said, "concern".

As a picky and grouchy, (and rapidly aging) amateur bass player who started playing the bass in around 1973, I seriously prefer JLoch86's videos with TAB, Chords(!), standard notation.
What's more, I can easily hear the bass line that JLoch86 is playing!
Here is what I mean.


I could not find one of our TB member from Italy. He's been posting a lot of short but excellent video that could be very helpful for any aspiring bass players.
I'll try to find it later. My memory does not serve me...

i was frustrated that the female player on the first page is instantly written off as getting more subscribers because she's a hot chick. maybe she does good videos and is a good player or seems personable and new players are intimidated by tab on the screen - in fact, you bet that's often the case. maybe she knows how to market her channel on twitter and FB or maybe someone with lots of followers blogged about her.

or here's one for ya - maybe young aspiring female bass players 12 to 15 find something to relate to in her, and since she's inspiring them, they're subscribing. maybe non-bass players subscribe because she's a pretty girl, but we don't care about them :D

it's fine that you prefer it. i don't - and that's what makes the world an interesting place. we all have different preferences, so there's lots of everything, enough to go around.

If not you should be given some slack. But regardless, you're not communicating clearly. You post one thing that makes little or no sense and then add more details later about what you "meant" that was in no way descernible from reading your original post.

What you say here that you intended in response to my pointing out that the Flea video you posted was not uploaded by Flea does not correspond to what you actually wrote.

So let me ask again, since you have not answered: Do you understand that entertainment channels and education channels are not the same thing and cannot be compared to each other?

She toured with them in 2015. Pretty impressive credentials tbh. That's a solid gig.

About your question. Yes, I do understand the difference between the entertainment and education!
In short.
If I want to learn something, then
JLoch86 videos have much more value then Marta's ones!
If I want to be entertained, I listen to the originals!
I hope you as a musician have understood my point ☝️.
