Acme Users Unite!!!

Having owned and played through regular old 2x15's & 4x10's... as well as Acme's (B4's & B2's)... I can suggest a cab if what you're wanting is a mid-focused voicing AND upper end clarity.

The last "BIG" cabs I owned before downsizing to my current rig were a couple of Mesa Powerhouse 2x12's. Try one of those, and see what you think!

So which do you prefer, or what did you end up with? Acme?

I've always been interested in the Mesa cabs.....never had a chance to obtain or play one.
I'm all cabbed out now, so it's not likely I will be trying too many other cabs.

I ended up with a Mesa Walkabout stack that covers my needs beautifully!

Not suggesting that you go and spend $ on another cab, but if you can borrow or rent one... ;)

If it sounds good, it is good![/b]

I had an ART channel strip, sold it, and just recently on a whim bought a Presonus Studio Channel. Major improvement over the ART IMO. Nice compressor and the 3 band EQ is dual-selectable: treble & bass shelving or semiparametric EQ.

BTW, your old B-2 and B-2W are sitting in my living room. It's a long story... So, now I've got two B-4's, and two B-2's. I'm gonna bolt them all together and make a B-12. I've also learned you can't hide speaker cabs from your wife like you do with bass purchases.

I'm working on a bit of an Acme B2 clone. I have a pair of (surprisingly cool) Dayton (Parts Express) 10's that have a low Fs and huge magnets and an Eminence Alpha 6A. It seems like a cool and very cheap (given that the parts sort of fell in my lap) project. I can get solid low E performance in a small (3.5 ft^3) box or solid low B performance if I'm willing to go to a 4.5 ft^3 box).

I'm watching this ancient thread with interest.

Is an Acme B2 driven by a GB Shuttle 6.0 loud enough to cover a PA for vocals only type rock band?

Ha, are you serious? :eyebrow: That was quick! I would love to hear that story :hiding::ninja:

Eh, its not that bad. Doug / dcr and I have been friends for yours. Nothing ever goes unused or to waste. I have some Neutrik NYS banana plugs (w/ strain relief) en route for a cab-to-cab daisy jumper. Haven't even plugged them in yet...they do work, don't they?

I actually find the GS112's to be fairly deep sounding especially 2 together. The Acme is a lot smoother sounding. I find you need to bump the mids a bit to get definition when playing live. Great cabs though. I like my GS112's a lot, but the Acme has something special.

I'm using a Banana (amp end) to 1/4" (speaker end) speaker cable.

You should never use a 1/4" Phone plug in bridge mode. Both the sleeve and the tip are hot. If the metal of your plug touched any other grounded object you will short out one of your channels. The plug is also incapable of handling the voltage and current involved safely. Only speakons are safe for this service.

Hi

What,s the best power amp for a B-4 ? looking for a clean and deep low end sound .

Crest CA-9 , CA-6 or Stewart power amps ? , no limit in money.

Thanks for your help

I ran a PLX 2402 for about 3 or 4 years. Way, Way more than enough power. worked great.

I've been using a Crown XLS 1500 for a year or so. Still have tons of headroom, dirt cheap, light as hell...as good as a power amp needs to be.

The feature I look for in an Acme power source is it's capabilities in the DSP as far as control of the low end goes. I find that High pass filters can be a real help in some rooms.

If there's is any sonic difference at all between the Lead Sleds and the lightweights, it's so insignificant that I can't hear it. If I could, the difference in the hump factor between an 80 pound rack and a 30 pound rack is a MORE than fair trade (to me)
