Acme Users Unite!!!

Fellow Acme lovers... it seems that my B4 has managed to take out my QSC power amp. Last night at a gig, I went to power up my rack, and the BMax turned on just fine, but the QSC was DOA... it simply will not turn on, we tried multiple cables and multiple outlets to try to isolate the problem and it is definitely the amp. I had to run through my Sansamp the whole night. It's an RMX 1850HD, and I was running it in bridged mono to get the full 1800 watt output. I was having to keep the gain on it set pretty high because our practice is room is small, and as you know, small = little room for bass to develop. Most unfortunate.... and there isn't an authorized QSC repair center either. :hmm:

FYI: the "Flat" Setting...aighty, a few guys have PM'ed me asking what the true "flat" setting on the attenuators are, and from what i gather from you guys, and what's in the manual, i'm pretty sure its:

-2dB on the highs attenuator
-5dB on the mids attenuator

I've read that too and I'm not so sure, especially as the flat settings should have the least attenuation for the B4 and the most for the B1. Also, as you get further away from the rig the air and audience attenuates the highs so a bit of extra high-end helps, and the subtle midrange boost (and it is really subtle if it's there) helps you cut through too. And with my vertical stack, any extra output from the mid and highs diminishes at a greater rate as you move away from the cab whilst the 10"s acting as a line source maintain a higher SPL as you move away.

Regardless, I'm much happier with the attenuators all the way up, especially as I run a lot of effects and don't want to pour extra power into the highs which then blows the protection bulbs.

now THAT is what i'm talkin' about!

what preamp BT? cant quite make it out.

That looks like an SWR Grand Prix to me. Awesome rig - how's the power distributed? Which PLX?

The B4W is a sub only and Andy doesn't recommend it as a stand alone cabinet. You would be better suited with a B4. However you may also want to consider two B2s. Alex turned me on to that and it is well worth the extra cost. With two B2s you can have one at the rehersal space and the other at home. When you have large gigs you can bring both and the two B2s will be easier to move around.

Do anyone has pics of The ACME LOW B4W ???
I dont know which one to choose B4 or B4W ??
Which one would you advice, I play blues and reggae

For me an Acme without the mid and high driver sounds like pure crap. I base that on the sound I get if the bulb burns out. You're dead above 1K

I haven't lookes at the manual in a while but I kind of recall that as being a suggested, what people seem to like setting.

I tested both my cabs with pink noise and a spectrum analizer out doors to try to eliminate any room effect and both of those boxes are Flat with the attuators all the way up.

Andy doesn't tweak specs. They do exactly what he says they do. When the guys I was with at the time of the test saw that response curve, they immediatly dragged both of my B-2's into their studio to test as mix down monitors. Two years later they still have one of them.

It's an SWR Grand Prix with...a Telefunken tube. And what a huge difference THAT made. Nothing brings out subtle changes like an Acme box.

Ah, hot-rodded GPs! Mine has a NOS triple-mica 5751 - thicker, fatter, smoother and clearer than the original 12AX7.

That makes sense.

It's certainly not the greatest sound in the world, but it's got me to the end of gigs... However, since I went from 425W per Low-B2, to 900W per cab (and from Mackie to QSC PLX), I haven't blown a single bulb!

Thanks. It really is. I have a shed full of Hartke, Eden and Epifani cabs sitting next to Trace Elliot, GK and Sm500 amps that I've used in just about every combination possible and NOTHING even gets close to what those Acme's can do.

The power amp is a 2402 the cabs are both 4 ohms and have been wired just about every way including in series and bridged at 8 ohms. Right now it's plain old stereo at 4 a side. Anyone that thinks an Acme can't get loud needs to stop by and plug into that thing.

I don't think I've blown a bulb since I started using bulbs made for Harley Davidsons. Which was a real blessing as that rig works at the very least 5 nights a week and I was running through bulbs about every 2 or 3 months.

Hi all.
Is the sound is really loud ??? Cause I dont need any treble.. ;)

When driven to Xmax, an Acme cab will move as much or more air as any 4x10 cab. The problem is how much power it takes to get there and how clean the power needs to be.

I've used my SM500 with one B-2 at small acoustic duo gigs and it was fine but you can forget about getting loud with 575 watts into a B-4. Loud starts at about 1Kw worth of GOOD power amp.

An Acme has unbelievable accuracy and you will hear the distortion as soon as it starts. It doesn't matter if the specs say the amp is a million watts at 5% distortion. As soon as that signal starts to pick up distortion, it's over. You'll hear it and hate it and you'll hear it in the low end first so, treble needs are a non- issue.

Plus, with two Low B-2's, you have the option to stack them vertically!
