Acme Users Unite!!!

I just got back from my first Acme-less band practice in a while. I think I had forgotten how gorgeous the Acme sounds - my backup Avatar 2x10/SWR 1x15/Peavey Nitrobass rig sounds anemic in comparison. I miss that thick, detailed tone, and the most drastic difference is playing stuff higher up on the neck, over the 12th fret. On the backup rig, everything sounds really cloudy and lacks definition up there... with the Acme it is razor sharp and clear.

It's an SWR Grand Prix with...a Telefunken tube. And what a huge difference THAT made. Nothing brings out subtle changes like an Acme box.

sooooo true...

(...) Andy doesn't tweak specs. They do exactly what he says they do. When the guys I was with at the time of the test saw that response curve, they immediatly dragged both of my B-2's into their studio to test as mix down monitors. Two years later they still have one of them.

awesome...

Do anyone has pics of The ACME LOW B4W ???
I dont know which one to choose B4 or B4W ??
Which one would you advice, I play blues and reggae

definitely the B-4. tweeters down, the Acme has almost no cut for me. but holy crap, with proper power, the Acme handles those low low frequencies like a ferrari handles corners: fast, precise, and full of flavor. :eyebrow: :D

and while i'm sure a pair of B2's rock, i have yet to hear a 4x10 match the sonic articulately clear SLAM of a B-4.

cmon,

you know you want a pair of B-4's... :smug: :D

Oh sure, I'd love to hear a pair of Low B-4's, but I am really trying to stick with cabs that I can get up and down my steps without bashing walls, door jams, or small children. I think about the biggest cab that will satisfy this criteria is either the Whappo, Jr. or the HT310. Well, maybe an NV215... ;)

Must I take a 4 or 8 Ohm B-2 cab to fit with my ashdown evoII (600W) ???
I want to be sure sure that I wont break the speaker..
Help me plz :help:

Can anyone show a pic of the back of a B2 ?????

I have been using a Ashdown EVO II with my B-4 for the past year now and have not had any problems with sound or volume.IMHO I would get a 8 ohm cab so that it will leave you an option for another B-2 later if you want/need it.

enough to have enough sound to cover a drummer without breaking the speaker if I put 500w power..

Still not enough info.

What kind of drummer? How hard does he/she play?

What kind of music? Jazz, metal?

How big are the places you play? Do you have PA support, or does the amp have to supply all the sound? Do you have monitors, and can the bass be in the monitors?

I have played gigs with a 500 W amp (Euphonic Audio iAmp 500) into a 4 ohm B-2, and it was easily enough. But they were not high volume gigs, no metal, and the drummer was not a basher. Everything depends on context.

ok
I play with reggae, blues and pop rock bands..
I want to use the cab for small clubs I play in..
On big stage I prefer to go with a DI on the table.
Drummers I play with, are brutal :) but I don't mind with volume, they ll just have to calm down, my main worry is about not destroying the B-2 speakers with my 600W amp + active Musicman + Sansamp BDDI..
I just explosed my 1x15' 400w Mesa Cab, I dont want to do the same thing with my new cab.. That's why I wonder if I should take a B2 or B4 ....

You'd be safer, and slightly louder, with a B-4. Or two B-2s. But you seem to be looking for a guarantee that you'll be absolutely safe now matter how you use your gear, and no one here can give you that. Absolute certainty can't be achieved in this area. All any of us can talk about is likelihood or probability. If you push that amp too hard, yes, there is a *chance* you can blow the cab. Use some common sense, don't crank the lowest bass too much, don't push the amp beyond its limits, and you most likely will be OK.

But understand, I'm not *guaranteeing* anything. Any equipment can be broken by misuse. If you are pushing your amp hard enough to blow up a 400 W 15", you may be pushing it hard enough to blow up a B-2 as well. And since the B-2 is possibly less efficient than your Mesa 15" was, you may have to push the amp even harder to get the volume you want.

Based on this comment, I'd say go with a B4 if you're only using one cabinet.

In the last band that I was in, I paired a 4 ohm B2 with an EV designed TL606 cabinet (8 ohm EVM 15B). Each cabinet was on its own channel of my PLX2402. The band played way, way too loud and I had no PA support. The B2 was doing all it could (with up to 725 watts available power), but the EVM really carried the volume.

The TL606 is nearly identical to your Mesa cabinet so I would guess that if you destroyed the Mesa by trying to play too loud, the B2 won't even come close.

I currently have a 4 ohm B-1 on order but after reading all the posts here, I'd like to make sure my reasoning makes sense.

I currently have an SWR Basic 350 and a Goliath II Jr. The amp is rated at 250W at 8 ohms, 350W into 4 ohms and 450W into 2 ohms. I play either solo at home, in a low volume jazz duet with a guitarist or on a worship team.

The two things I'm looking for with the B-1 is an articulate sound and easy portability. I think the B-1 will work on both counts.

For the type of music I play, I think it'll also work. The only scenario where it may not is on the worship team. But for that, I'll be going through the PA so the B-1 will be used as a stage monitor. If it's not enough, I'd probably consider adding a second B-1.

Where I need the help is with the resestance. Is 4 ohms the right cab to get or should I consider the 8 ohm one? I'm thinking the 350W will work with a single 4 ohm cab better than 250W into the 8 ohm cab.

If I add a second cab, I'd be looking at either 350W into 4 ohms or 450W into 2 ohms for two cabs combined from my amp. At this point I'd probably consider a different amp. Either a pre / power amp or an iAmp 800. Would an IAmp 800 be able to drive two 4 ohm B-1's?

So, I thinking for my current situation, a single 4 ohm cab would be better than an 8 ohm one. But in the future, would I be better off with two 8 ohms or two 4 ohms?

I hope I said all this clearly.

As always, thanks for the help (spending my money),
LeonD

(...)

but of course!! my rig of choice for my worship team gigs is a pair of B-1's (each 4 ohms) and my iAMP-800, which according to the gents at EA safely hits 2 ohms @ 1000 watts!!!

the low B action is MUCHO awesome. to be honest and frank, an iAMP & acme rig just might obsolesce your current rig. ;)

btw, i recently got a brand spankin' new B-2 from Andy, cause my praise team LOVES using my B-1's as PA speakers for our retreats and revivals. you can imagine the DI tones. :p

but, i do hear a few differences in the tone btwn the B-2 and B-1, but nothing major. the B-1 is a bit more diffuse and all around you, while the B-2 seems a bit more focused. other than that, you still get some MASSIVE low B action.

bottom line, they'll all let your supremely sweet MTD 6 shine like no other.
