I love Fender style basses but for me-Sadowsky, Lakland and Mike Lull makes much better versions of these basses....

But I respect those that feel differently
We all have a different feel and tone that we prefer

There is no way they are overrated because there are too many bassists that love them
and there is a reason that their mainstays- the P and the J have been around so long

Not for me-yes (except a Pre-CBS-serious GAS)

I love my '68 Jazz Bass I don't even own! I once played a Mike Dirnt Signature and almost buyed it instead of paying my heart transplant! I once exchanged my parents for a Jaguar Bass! I LOVE FENDER SO MUCH I TATTOED ITS LOGO ON MY LEFT LUNG!

You just helped me build my point, and as you say, yeah, it's the LEAST expensive on that list, but remember also I said ''like [...] other brands'', that's where you came in, stating Gibson (good basses, but it's pretty basic equipment), Musicman (love them, hate the price tags, but that's because I'm cheap), G&L (well I'm ashamed I never heard of them before!) and Rickenbacker (sweet Jesus I WANT ONE! I'm not saying they're not worth their price (If I did I take that back, I didn't meant to) BOOOOOOT, when it comes to build materials, electric/electronic components and sound quality, they sometimes are exceeded against some cheaper or equally priced products...

The products that undercut US-made basses in pricing nearly always are made in countries where labor rates are a small fraction of what the are here.

Labor rates (base salary + benefits):
California: $31.50/hr
Mexico: $6.50/hr
China: $2.20/hr


$2.20/hr vs. $31.50/hr. Now throw in cheap hardware and electronics, and that's why you can buy a brand new Squier CV Pbass for $299.

And if a kid with $200 bucks in his pocket wants a killer bass, Squier can provide him with a really great instrument. the rest is politics

And if a kid makes $2.20/hr, that kid won't be able to buy a $200 bass. Or anything else. So much for "politics". People love it when other people make starvation wages. Except, of course, when the wage-hammer comes down on them.

Well indeed you're talking about the MINIMUM wage, the one is not even worth an honest days work. Unfortunately that's the sad sad truth.

I'm assuming those two Jaguars are passive only? If you have a "hum" it's likely a grounding issue.

If you're hearing a "buzz", it's the single coil pickups when set at different volume levels. Nothing to do with them being Fender brand.

Some American Deluxe J's did have a bad hum, which was addressed here at the time (c. 2010-11) I just got a 2012, played it out on Saturday and it kills. Dead quiet, too. I'm a P-Bass fan, but this bass is enough to make a J convert out of me. I must say, I briefly owned a '57 AVRI P recently that had a giant bass-side neck gap and the E string was so close to the edge of the neck at the nut that it would fret out. But generally I find Fender USA quality to be quite high these days.

After reading this thread I came to understand how bad Fender American Deluxe Basses really are.
