That is the PERFECT giging bass for Alembic lovers. Equally at home in the studio or a tight bar room stage. Now you've got me gassing for one of these as well. Enjoy your treasure, I'm sure it plays as good as every other Alembic I've heard.

I have this posted in a technical area but I thought I might get an answer here so please bear with me.

"I had an Alembic Epic 5 as my primary back in the ninties so I know how the Alembic is supposed to sound. I just purchased a 1993 Alembic Essence fretless here on TB. Sounded a bit strange out of the case. I installed new TI Jazz 344 flats; when I went to change out the battery a post terminal broke off with the old battery. Disconnected the battery terminal jack, soldered in a new battery connector and reinstalled with new Duracel 9V. Something is not right. Even at what should be the deepest sounding setting it sounds very trebly and "clanky". Sent an email to Alembic Tech Support yesterday (12/5/2012) but have yet to receive a reply. Any suggestions or constructive thoughts on a direction are appreciated."

Both are amazing beyond words.

I have 2 more coming, another custom 5 string series II (Quilted Cocobolo, some custom inlay work and a custom asymetrical neck profile), and a Little Darling guitar as well. I can't wait :)

Thanks! Sometimes I wish I was a gigging bassist, but then I hear myself play and look at my schedule and realize that it is probably for the best that I'm not.

I have had the privilege of playing two Alembics (mine and an Epic), and I actually prefer mine!

Not really - maybe @ times- but I run my DS5R directly & per pickup into my SF-2, (they are both mounted in a 2 space rack and placed on a tilt back amp stand at around waist height. Light weight, EASY to change settings on the fly and I am able to vary the tone quite a bit just with volume control action - I'll add a picture later), from there the signal is sent to my small format Mackie mixer then to either a mono or stereo setup using 1 or 2 heads/ cabinets.

I actually run my Six string Élan wide open on the filter this way either straight to an amp, through the Superfilter and/ or the mixer.

Mike Arponol built my Thunderchild 212 ( cabinet on top) & the fEARful 15/6 which are both composite builds, the 212 weighs 39#s.
Next to the stack, they usually go side x side is the rack with the DS-5R & SF-2.

I had a pair of Alembics... but, you know, I kept trying to make them sound all warm and (dare I say) vintage-y, as that's the sound I really used the most. Even with Alembic's superb electronics, it was a lot of tweaking to get that sound... the sound that my "straight-to-the-amp" Precisions made with just two knobs and nothing else, not even a nine volt battery.

I still love Alembics, I admire their workmanship and the wonderful people who work there. But, in the end, I found I was seeking the classic passive bass sounds, and the Alembics got sold.

I've been favoring my Bridge pickup lately so as to get "closer" to a P or J bass tone. At Alembic they want the Neck pickup as close to the end of the fingerboard as possible, as I clearly did not follow. Trust me with the ebony lam, their is no shortage of deep low end or sustain - which I tame down by the pickup favoring methodology.

Will Gunn left enough space between his Bridge & bridge pickup along with a concealed hardware Bridge on his Essence "Series" so as to fit a foam mute in that space. (I don't have that luxury of space within my configuration :( .)

His has the same neck recipe as mine does.

By the way Leap of Faith & Lions Roar are 2 of my favorite customs!
