John has said that the Beatles were the best they ever were as a band when they were playing in Germany. Pete was the drummer at that time. Not knocking why they went with Ringo or the contribution that he made.

Despite what was done to him, Pete has shown a lot of class in all his post Beatles interviews. I’m glad that he finally made some Beatle money when the reissues were put out.

Pete was a decent musician, but the other 3 were exceptional by comparison. He just wasn't meant for stardom. I don't think most people are.

I've always guessed that once they were exposed to Ringo (he sat in with them in Hamburg), they couldn't really settle for Pete anymore.
Ringo was the catalyst, I think. The final piece that had to fall into place.

I think I read somewhere that it was just a matter of who kept better time. Ringo was rock solid.

Most accounts I've read said Pete was an "OK" drummer, but not really "one of the guys", more standoff-ish. But his mom also ran the Cavern [Casbah Coffee]* Club, where they could be seen! Yeah, they really liked Ringo sitting in occasionally, but he was already "taken" by the very popular Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, where they used American western movie nicknames. It was George Martin’s assessment of Pete's drumming that brought things to a head, when he refused to use him on recordings. You can hear Pete's "eccentric" time change in the middle of his version of Love Me Do to understand Martin’s perspective. So, Epstein was tasked by J, P & G with firing Pete, while they went and wooed Ringo to leave the Hurricanes for The Beatles recording contract!! And the "fab four-headed monster" was born.

There's also that excellent story told by Paul about the first time Ringo sat in with them. Immediately after the first downbeat, Paul spun around and said, "What the #%!:& is that??"
(It's a great drummer.)

Ringo always seem to come up with drum patterns, so unique but fit the song so well. As opposed to standard drum beats. I approach Bass the same way. Obviously not to the degree of Sir Richard’s skill level. One can only hope to be that skilled.

Having read Hunter Davies’ book on the Beatles, the first serious bio(came out while they were still together)I seem to recall that the sacking of Best was due to personality conflicts, that he was something of a drip, and that he was reluctant to loose the pompadour and go with the new image. He was definitely an adequate, if not run of the mill rock’n’roll drummer…


But Ringo just had that ‘Je ne sais quoi’ and was easier to get along with.

Yes, it was Ray Charles' "What'd I Say?," which Ringo nailed, that other drummers couldn't quite get right. I love these 'origin stories'! I can see the yet-to-be-made movie in my mind.

Yeah, Pete wasn't as witty and outgoing as the others. (Neither was Stu, but John took a real liking to him. So...) But, a "drip," well ... ? And, a bit in Pete's defense, he had that naturally curly hair that didn't fit the "exi-cut," that Astrid gave the other lads, at all. (I can relate, as my almost curly hair in high school required the very rare extreme low humidity day to cooperate!) And the 'birds'* really seemed to go for Pete's curly pompadour, so why try to change? (I would kill to relate, as my hair was never either curly, or straight, or thick, enough on most days to do anything with!)​

Ringo and "What'd I Say?"--

I recorded a "rock" music cartoon special on the Catholic Channel this morning. There was a band called BeatRocks, obviously a Beatles style group. They sounded very much like the Rutles. Especially the guitar. Hmm, I wonder...

Today, I went for a walk and took a shortcut through a church parking lot. At exactly that moment, a teenage band was being introduced. None of them looked older than 15. It was an outdoor event of some kind. Anyway, they opened with... "Come Together"! And they did a really, really nice job. My favorite part was that it had the feel and mood of the original, and wasn't filtered through the Red Hot Chili Peppers, or something. No irony or funkification.
I actually got a bit teary-eyed! There's hope for the future!
