Even though Tim, from Dirtywave kinda undersells all the bonkers stuff the M8 can do, it’s nice to see the company get more exposure

Lots of folks are put off by that dudes style (myself included), but he is crazy knowledgeable about gear, studio production and sound design. His other YouTube channel (suture sound?) is way more palatable. He does seem like a nice enough fella even though his music makes my skin crawl

After more videos dropped, I'm gonna say no to Xaoc Sofia, but maybe to Xaoc Koszalin. I kind of ignored frequency shifters up until now, thinking they were best used for psychedelic 70s swirly "flanger but more" stuff. But the demos got me trying out the freq shifters in Bitwig and VCV Rack, and then going back to hear how much better the Xaoc one is than the plugins. It's tempting.
(But if I decide not to buy it, I'm still grateful it inspired me to explore frequency shifters.)
The other hot thing is Klavis Grainity, a "granular VCF" which made everyone say "what the hell is a granular VCF?" Apparently a multimode filter with several poles, and something like a wavetable oscillator flips between them rapidly in a pattern, which adds a lot of texture. The frequency of switching tracks the input signal and can be detuned and divided.
I tried patching up something similar, but it's only a very loose approximation and doesn't sound as smooth.
So now I have to decide what I'm willing to let go of to make room.
(But if I decide not to buy it, I'm still grateful it inspired me to explore frequency shifters.)

Man... That's pretty cool. I mostly use the weird out there (still cheap) pedals from the 80s-00s. Nothing quite like a HM-3 fed through a DS-1 and a Free Speech talk box... Layer some delay and a fair bit of luck with your improv and it can sound really sweet. Kinda sounds like evil daft punk.
Looking to try out a lot more ambient and post-metal stuff. Kinda Deafheavenly. if you got any recommendations I'd be much obliged. I can't find a shimmer reverb that satisfies me with its tone on bass. They all seem very guitar oriented, so do most of the complicated delays (like the back talk or pitch shifter delays). And I'm not smart enough to mod them

I find the ehx oceans 11 with the tone down is pretty good… really wanted a dark aura modulated reverb but realised I can get pretty much the same thing with the oceans 11… I don’t use all the modes but I like the modulated chorused reverb on the 11
What have you tried?
If you've got the budget, Empress Reverb has some nice shimmer reverbs (2 modes) plus the ghost engine which is quite good. It isn't sparkle octave up, but it is resonant with lots of feedback.

The EQD Astral Destiny does the shimmer thing really well on bass. Empress Echosystem is a fantastic delay.
My favorite use of frequency shifters is for "That's a ring modulator! Wait, no it isn't...is it?" type sounds. E.g., clangourous metallic serrated harmonics that give a big middle finger to any semblence of note/pitch integrity. There's something wonderfully insouciant about them.
mostly boss stuff TBH. The Emperess Reverb looks pretty sweet. Seems like it'd probably be worth the cash too. Thanks for the recommendation!

If that's in your budget, then you should probably look at Rooms. I haven't tried it, but it sounds pretty good.
They Strymon stuff gets lots of love. I didn't love the Big Sky when I tried it (particularly the shimmer).
The Walrus SLO is a bit easier on the budget, but I haven't tried it. It sounds decent, but hasn't blown me away.
I think @dukeorock used the Specuar Tempus.
I've been curious about Neunaber, but never tried.
... Hungry Robot makes some interesting stuff, but I didn't love the pedal I had on bass.
