Right around the time Yamaha introduced the 2nd generation of DX synths -- so, 1987 maybe? Whenever the DX-7 IIFD, the TX802, and the TX-81Z came out -- I got super into FM programming...but one of the things I always missed from those systems was a way to combine that 2nd gen FM architecture with external sources, to be used as either carriers or modulators.
So a modern modular rig with a full-blown FM section as just one of its components, with tons of audio and CV i/o?!?!? jebus christmas, sign me up!

I ordered a Sparks. The guy seems nice and was helpful. It’s a real functional analog WaveFolder pedal. Ribbons looks cool too.
After my SSG explorations I picked up a used Toppobrillo Sport Modulator 2 which is instant fun in the Euro system.
Also got a Northern Light Modular CV Polymorpher for my Easel Command. I already have an Ornament and Crime in Euro, and this one has a few extra features. Makes the Command feel like a much bigger system.
finally, I splurged on a few tini-jax plugs (because of silly Buchla legacy standard) that I will solder to 1/4” plugs so I can run the 208c oscillators straight in and out of pedals since they are line level.

i know a bit about modular and half of that sounded like a foreign language to me.
Oops. I was thinking about getting a basic midi and cv keyboard and the keystep was on my radar. Then I noticed the midi and cv outs on the microfreak and the price tag wasn’t wildly larger than the one on the keystep, and I had a Perfect Circuit coupon. So I accidentally bought a new synth. I forgot to use my store credit though.
Finally uploaded a live clip of my 8-string piece with the Tonal Recall:
Figured out how to use my Dunlop mini-volume pedal as an expression pedal to control the feedback - any more and it would get ugly but I think this turned out pretty good - glad I went through with performing it, I was almost ready to bail!

So I’m still yet to get to recording of anything . But did have some fun on the weekend with boss ps3 addition back to the board and also plugging the mini nova into the bass amp. Mainly the kids wanted to play with it so had a bit of time just going through the patches. Still unsure what I could add in my normal metal band except for intro maybe but it did sound wild… was going to sell it at one point but it sounds very rich and full with all the craziness I’d ever want for a bass synth. Some reviews say it’s pretty much a vst in a box but it’s awesome to be able to morph and mess around with drone sounds as well as the factory patches.
it’s funny how “vst in a box” is a pejorative. small, portable, powerful, standalone all seem like plusses for a lot of people.

And many new boxes are basically a (hopefully somewhat) focused VST in a box anyway.
Torso S-4 is finally out, with some glaring omissions (no midi sync!?) promised to be implemented some time in June. Pretty neat little box regardless.
No MIDI Sync seems like a huge/lazy miss.
I'm still pretty curious about this device.
Basically, version 1.0 of anything with software now is what used to be called a beta. I am interested but will hold off until I can try one with the kinks worked out.

It’s funny how a feature might seem insignificant until you start trying to use it and realize the potential spiderweb of issues. Tonight I’m testing out the Microfreak as a CV programming tool for the Erica Black Sequencer. First I realized how bad my timing is as I seem to be triggering the gates so they are recorded a 16th note early. Next I realized the pitch isn’t quite right and there’s a funny + symbol by each note. It turns out that Erica records the exact CV value and there’s actually a few ms of glide between pitches (per the manual). They suggest using midi to record incoming pitches since midi sends exact notes. There’s also a cv quantization option that will quantize to chromatic, which gets the pitches right. Nice work by Erica for considering all the ways signals can send imperfect values and figuring out how to address those.
This reminds me of doing a bass setup. Change strings and the tension shifts. Now you need to adjust the intonation, action, and truss rod. Of course there’s an order of operations to keep everything on track but if you’ve never been told what that is then you might not figure it out on your first attempt.

My eurorack has been in the closet for months, but I do like everything I see in the Erica Black sequencer. Strong Elektron vibes.
It’s been a good tool for learning what I do and don’t want/like because it does a lot. It has some quirks and isn’t perfect for me. I keep looking at the Vector and the Usta and the Hermod+ for various reasons and even the OxiOne. Size, price, hardware interfaces, and the user interfaces are all so different, and it’s a never ending search for what works with my workflow. That’s a moving target too, as every time I learn something new it alters what I want in a tool of this sort. The good news is that it keeps me thinking and learning and reframing my understanding of music in general, which is ultimately what I’m doing with all this. I’ll never be a pro or commercial artist, so that isn’t the goal. I would like to keep the money and space resources spent reasonably in check, but I’m unlikely to go too far off the rails with those… well in terms of not being a detriment to my well being. Others will always argue “you could have done X instead.”
This is me in my camp… I get on my laptop once a fortnight if that… having something standalone that had so many effects and distortions, reverbs, easy ways to change pitch erc without menu diving… was half the appeal to me. I was considering the korg monologue but for a little bit more money the mini nova seemed to have so much more (and no paddle stick thing!)
Question for all owners of any Line 6 HX family stuff.

Not to mention adding alot of connections, stands, A/B switches, comps etc to even out going from bass to synth into the same amp.
Currently using the OC-2 thang with various drives and filters.
I must mention stuff ive tried live and hated.
Boss SY-1, Boss sy….the old one….any zoom stuff, anything Source Audio
How good is the Line 6 stuff for creating synth sounds?

Not sure if I’d buy a helix if I was judging by those sounds.
I didn't find anything I liked but I also didn't work very hard, since I have other synths. I am guessing the basic building blocks are there but it will require some programming on your end to get what you want.
I don't get that either. Sure, you could do that on your laptop, but your laptop may not have the ideal interface for the music you want to make.
I recommend thinking about them like instruments. They all have strengths and weaknesses for sure. Probably more than one is ideal but which will depend. For me, it's a mix of the Linnstrument for manual playing/arpeggiating; the Torso T-1 for more generative stuff/things I couldn't play by hand; and the Vector, which is a little less immediate but will let me do just about anything I can dream up for a monophonic sequence (or rather, 8 of them). on iPad I'm a big fan of Patterning and Fugue Machine.
I think I bought the Oxi too soon. It was getting update after update, and then updates changed how it worked, and I put it away. I'll probably take it back out at some point but this group is enough fun for me. May have also been the case with the Hapax, but I felt it "thought" in MIDI while I "think" in CV now.
The other thing is combining stuff. For my June gig I've been experimenting with using the Linnstrument alongside the Buchla's sequencer through a quantizer. Because the Buchla sums all MIDI and CV note info and there are very accessible switches on top, you can get very complex very quickly.
