Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

A few minutes in and thinking this is of interest for some here.

ETA - Not particularly great. Best takeaway - if the pad has busy movement then make the part simple, if the pad is doesn't then experiment with a busier part. Also, don't use all the notes to make a huge chord in the pad, instead use two or three and leave arrangement space for other instruments.

I’ve got a mult box that’s 5 pin only. I also just tested running midi in my microfreak via usb and out via TRS to 5 pin to pass clock to my delay. I noticed the microfreak’s knob cc messages were also passing to the delay so I had to turn those off but it was nice to see they worked.

I don’t have any experience with merging from multiple sources like you’re proposing.

I did some looking through the midi boxes on Perfect Circuit’s site. It looks like you might need a daisy chain of 2 or 3 things to get that combo to work. The USB requirement seems to be a wrinkle. Maybe ping the folks at Disaster Area with your situation and see what they suggest. I don’t see an existing product on their page that would be a silver bullet.

Of all the euro skiff/cases I’ve been looking at, why is this unreasonable monstrosity the one I want the most?
It is the least cheap per HP and I’m not even sure the lid leaves enough room to keep much of anything patched when sealed up. Still… I keep going back to the page. I think I have some justification/plan about being able to stack pedals on it or something.

I did not like the MioXM. It’s easy enough to set it up how you want using the app. But then one day it stops working, you have to download an update and then redo everything in the app. Also the app isn’t very well designed. In sum, works great if you never interact with the app. But you have to interact with the app.

I’ve been using AUM on my iPad and a usb hub, which I prefer to the MioXM but would love a proper hardware hub that doesn’t require an app.

This device is overkill but also solves the problem: you can edit it from the front panel, doesn’t require an app, has host and DIN. MRCC MIDI Router Control Center and USB MIDI Interface

that’s a drag. using the app out in the real world or in home studio?

and that other thing is massive.

I actually played my bass today. It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned it so I wanted to state that I actually do still plug in the 5 string. I haven’t played much recently due to some pain issues, but that seems to be resolving, which means I can dust off my collection. Today was some noodling around well above the 7th fret, with a heavy application of reverse delay and reverb. I really need to have a recording device at the ready so I don’t need to break away from my playing to get set up.

I feel like I spend all my time auditioning pedals for the perfect bass-synth-drone playground in my head, including the recording set up at the end of the rainbow. Today’s mess…

yeah, it seems like not a giggle solution. The Retrokits 006 might be an option for you but it needs a powered hub if you want to host more than one thing.comes with trs to din adapters though and their stuff is reliable utilities.

As to the Mio, it was home studio. But ona gig if it burped you would need a computer with you to edit via the app. I never trusted it enough to take it out on a gig.

Super utilitarian haul from Perfect Circuit today. I got a 4ms 48x pod. I should be able to load my Zoia and a Strymon in/out module and have room for something else like a floor pedal to CV control module. I should be able to connect a My Volts RipCord to it and have a powered box. I’m hoping a bass can produce enough output that I don’t need an additional preamp to plug in.

I also looked at a few other configurations like being able to put a Bloom sequencer and the Erica Bassline module in there to work as a stand alone synth.

I also noodled with the Dreadbox Erebus and Hades. I liked the Erebus a lot, so I might order it tomorrow. But I also noodled with the Soma Terra and it was kinda fun. I had almost no clue what I was doing but I had fun exploring. I also tried the Lyra and found that less interesting.

I had a MIDI fail today - tried to control my Sirin with the Roland JX-08 - the Sirin was receiving MIDI signals but no sound. The Sirin is ok - was able to control it like usual with my PK-5A bass pedals, but no sound with the JX-08. I even set the correct MIDI output (5-pin vs. USB) but no luck. So gonna drag my Grandmother out tomorrow. Wish I had a reliable small keyboard to trigger the Sirin with…

I could’ve gotten away with a 40 HP box but I grabbed the 48 expecting to need another input gain device to get my guitar up to the right level. However preliminary testing shows I’m at a decent volume with just the +18 dB boost from the Strymon. The question is… do I return it for the smaller more convenient size or keep the bigger box for other ideas.
