Recorded ultra lo-fi with a Zoom recorder in the room. Whole thing is a vibe.
bonus is the cool artwork.
After years of wanting one, and even leapfrogging the Standard for a Deluxe, I finally landed a BN5 ambience machine. I won’t be able to plug in for a few hours, but it plays exactly like I expected and sounds lovely unplugged.
Assuming it plugs in as nicely as I expect, I’m going to apologize to my other basses and wish them luck in finding good homes.

^^^Sweet! I first -- and last -- played an FBass 33 years ago, but just based on that single experience I have lusted for one ever since. Someday if I have an extra $10k+ burning a hole in my pocket I'll get an AC-6.
Same played an F bass 5 string about 25 years ago and I still remember how «easy » it played and how light it was.
And this is coming from someone who isn’t a big fan of 5 strings.

F basses are absolutely top shelf.
Now you have me looking at that P bass they make, wonder if they could shave a few thousand dollars off it if I want all passive.

I’m reserving judgment until I can plug it in later tonight, but this could be my personal favorite. It plays right, and the fabrication is top notch. I was totally searching for a maple board and gloss finish, but the matte and ebony with this color was irresistible.
Plugged in.

Still some work to do finding the settings I’ll use regularly but I got some good preliminary results with my basic OTO comp, delay, and reverb chain.

Neat little simplified lo-fi 3-op FM voice with CV control. Makes for a nice growly drone box. If you want to sequence it you'll want a gate delay to compensate for the latency on the pitch CV.
I saw BEAT - the tribute to '80s King Crimson with Tony Levin on bass and lots of Stick - on the first show of their tour. I'm glad I saw it - how could I miss it?! I loved King Crimson when I was in high school, but have never seen them live (though I've seen Tony Levin with Peter Gabriel twice and once with his brother on keyboards) - now I feel like I can say that I kind of did lol
I thought of y'all during this, one of their most ambient tunes - and especially when Steve Vai stepped on some kind of delay feedback - it doesn't really come across here, but it got REALLY LOUD even with earplugs in - in fact, the whole show was mixed LOUD, which was kind of a bummer, these guys can be much more subtle... Video starts at "the note" - watch from the beginning to get an idea of how the Stick sounded.
I was pretty surprised by their tour schedule - lots of 3 night runs in different places, like San Jose (what I saw, then Napa, then Los Angeles! I hope it doesn't wear these guys down! But I also think that it will get better and better.

My brother-in-law saw the Napa show (2nd night of the tour) and texted me some pics and excited ravings during the show...and mind you, my BIL never texts me! He's just enough younger than I am that he probably couldn't have seen the original 80s KC lineup, so it was a real treat for him. Plus he's a drummer, so he was psyched to hear Danny Carey play some music that actually goes somewhere
I have tickets to BEAT's December show in Tucson, so I'm loving all these early reports from the field. Since I did see the original 80s KC lineup (twice; in '81 and in '84) I'm mostly looking forward to hearing how the arrangements have changed.

I would definitely see them again - they actually booked another show at the same place in November, but I'll be in Japan then, about which I cannot complain, it's the first time in almost 10 years. I lived there from 1982-88 - wasn't into King Crimson yet when they toured in 1984 dang it!
That was actually cool right up until they hosed the breakdown, at which point I stopped. Dude cops RJD's vocals well, Les nailed Jimmy Bain's tone, and the drums were fairly faithful. As much as I like Larry Lalonde, though, he's no Vivian Campbell.
I saw DIO a couple of times as a teenager back in the day and probably had memorized every note of every instrument on the first two albums. Me and my friends in high school were big fans.
