Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

@lordradish I started a whole thread about "noise" music, and I pretty much am where you are with some of the performers.

There's a difference between doing something deliberately and doing something because you have no idea what you're doing and you figure you can get away with random knob twisting and circuit bending because no one will know the difference. Among the regulars in the scene near me I can usually tell the difference after seeing enough shows and hanging out with some of them.

In the other thread I mention how Herbie Hancock broke rules in the 80s, but as he was an established jazz pianist he knew what the rules were when he was doing it and that made him more effective. I think the same is true for the sort of experimental underground electronic stuff: those who have played instruments in bands before have an idea of how music "works" and can use noise to make something deliberately. Sometimes, there are people who haven't played conventional music but happen to be smart and creative enough to make something interesting from scratch.

Just my opinion, of course.

I also get frustrated when I go to an electronic show and I see people heading for the door, chased out by incoherent noise, when I know a good act is coming up next. Some shows, though, are all about noise and that's what people are there to see.

I call it being musical. You generally learn a lot about being musical after playing any instrument for a while. And you don’t necessarily need great chops to be musical.

You should come to the Gatherings shows in Philly if you like Berlin School stuff. Chuck Van Zyle, Mike Hunter, and friends keeping it alive there with Chuck's radio show.

I sometimes take the Amtrak from DC, and walk to the show from 30th Street Station in Philly, then catch the red eye train back and sleep in late Sunday. Easy enough for me as it's only a 2 hour train ride, but from Vermont it blows a whole weekend I'd imagine.

The problem with that is you have to be extra careful how deep you cut, those djembe hippies tend to bleed out...


I agree with those others in the thread who noted French-showers isn't genre specific, that the non-listener-noise-makers can show up anytime anywhere any jam.

Hmm, they scaled that thing way back from the first version. Had that one for years, was never really super-psyched about it. Love my Aeros, though.

I’ve got the old one. It seems like it should be better than it is. It isn’t bad, but it’s big and has a few quirks.

Yeah, often found it frustrating to use, sometimes. The Aeros has the color screen, which has been a game changer for me.

Mosterthompson rightfully called me out for some beats. I left space for an emcee in some sections.

Here are two of some I made a while back. Using ableton. No quantize all drums played "finger drums" on pad controller.

"Bass" is either synth from ableton or my bass with OC2.

If anyone on here could throw some ambient reverb options my way, that'd be great. I just tried the OBNE Minim today and loved how it sounded, but I'm not sure I want to have exclusively modulated reverb. Besides their Rever, any other recommendations?
