Drugs...music....almost goes hand in hand. Bebop dudes wore the heroin addiction as a badge of honor. Look how many of them have the "heroin chin" on old pics.
All I’ve got is coffee tooth. Explains my level of success.
The sound he produced was impressive. Wish I could remember his name.

it’s so pervasive in my world that i don’t even think about it. i played 6 nights over the last 10 days with a drummer who used a bow on every gig; we played with two other groups that had drummers who also did. that guy nakatani handmakes bows that percussionists all over the world use.
(fwiw, i wrote a piece for bowed vibraphone.)

i do free improv with this group—from complete extended technique stuff to variations on raindrops keep falling on your head (trombone player threw a curve at us).
we did san francisco, sacramento, santa cruz, santa barbara, los angeles and mission viejo. did a lot of driving, hung with friend, basically lost money . . . but i was happy to do it. (i live in l.a., it can be active at times)

Fun is the key.
Not losing $ is a perk. After so many gigs......or you play top 40....I put an end to that years ago it sucked the life out of me literally
Or just don't do free gigs any more.
they weren't completely free, but i probably made about as much as i spent on gas. i'm okay with that.
i feel fortunate to be able to play music with like-minded individuals.
and, totally, i had to bail on top-40 and casuals case they were deadening.

I hear ya. Part of the reason I stepped away from gigs in the past is that it was about fun for me but about income for other members. I don’t want my hobby interest wound up with your rent and groceries.
I think my tipping point was a sub gig I had.....they called Day Tripper a major 3rd up.......in Ab....I said I'm out!!!!
That and the eternal meddley chopped with some #^#^$&$ 90s windows media player thing witb transitions that sound like @$$
Ya..dont get me started with my last band.....that is an insane story....maybe for another day or by PM.
We where signed to a major distribution company and opened for a few major acts.....biggest show
....over 17 000 people......then we had a fall out and I bailed big time. Left on very bad terms. I said this is never gonna happen EVER AGAIN FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE.
