if you mean the surface itself, sort of.

my experience with the ipad is a bit different.

you have tap, but you can also program to use the x and y coordinates—and can have two or more voices going in opposite directions at once.

some apps give you the ability to program using the gyroscope (i think that’s what they’re called?) capabilities as well.

all of which can make it pretty 3d (albeit in a different way than something with strings).

also, from what i can tell, a lot of ios apps are mpe capable.

I'm tellin' ya, delay pedal addiction is a real thing. The Endless Sleeper may be my 7th or so. They are so much fun and they all have different personalities.

I was considering the Caroline Guitar Company's Kilobyte lo fi delay, but the Sleeper edged it out for me.

I also apparently am developing a collection of pedals imported from overseas. I have a couple of Bananana pedals shipped from Japan and now the Sleeper from Australia. My very first pedal, an Arion chorus pedal, was made in Japan in the 80s and I'm pretty sure some of my stuff was made in China and Indonesia, so those count, right?

The hard part is deciding which pedals to use on which day and which project, that and organizing my rat's nest pedalboard.

The pedal fairy brought me something today, all the way from New South Wales, looks like. Came packed well, in a draw string bag with a nice instructions card.

Plugged it in for a test drive. So far sounds dreamy...

Mr Delay, any suggestions for a good one for sound manipulation.???
I have none in hardware form, the ones I use are in Ableton or on my Sp404.

I just dont have an unlimited budget, was looking at a boss dd-3 for a starter one on my noise manipulation board for live gigs.(these gigs get quite down and dirty so the gear gets abused)

Also open to higher end ones for “studio” use.

caveat is this this are what i have on my ancient ipad2—and some really max out its capabilities.

only chose x-y effects:

I'm no expert, especially on studio stuff, and I know nothing about Abelton or any of that software stuff, but of the digital delays I have I'd say that the Boss DD-7 and family are pretty safe choices. It has lots of options and it's Boss so it's a known quantity.

I also have the TC Electronic Flashback, which I like a lot.

Both of them are stereo-capable pedals and have lots of options. The Boss has a tap tempo function which is a little clunky, and the Flashback has a similarly clunky on-the-fly tempo control that involves holding the pedal down long enough for the pedal to sense a rhythmic pattern in the music and set itself accordingly. This actually works quite well, but doing it in the middle of a song results in an interruption in sound.

Of course there are the bigger fancier pedals which are really nice and have dedicated foot switches for stuff like that, but they are more expensive. I don't have any of those (yet). One of my band's guitarists has one of the big fancy Boss ones (he's a Boss fanboi), and my girlfriend uses a Boss Space Echo with her Theremin that sounds great.

I haven't yet had a chance to try any of the Strymon or other "Cadillac" pedals yet; so far I've stuck to more affordable stuff.

Speaking of affordable, if you're looking for a basic analog delay my favorite is the Garagetone Axel Grease, made by Visual Sound about 10 years ago. I don't think they are still made, but they were cheap when new so should be cheaper used. The thing was my only delay for a few years and I had great fun gigging with it and recording electronic stuff at home. When you turn the Repeats knob past about 1 o'clock, it self-oscillates, and you have to be careful it doesn't go out of control before killing your ears or your speakers, but once you get it to just ride the edge of self-oscillation, you can start manipulating the delay time knob and getting all the classic analog weirdness. Some digital pedals will emulate this but they never seem to get it right.

it does some cool stuff with having two delays at once. some of the on/off stuff and effect volumes are programmable so you can morph between them or bring one up. this can be done with an expressions pedal, etc., or programming the tap switch to to other stuff.

they also make the smaller dd-200, which (if i understand what i've read correctly) doesn't have the two simultaneous delays, but does have some programmability.

both have frequently used controls as knobs on the face of the pedal.

I think the DD-500 is the one my guitarist has. He also has the matching Boss reverb unit. Those two big pedals are the heart of his pedalboard and he's really practiced at using them, gets great sounds.

i have both those and the mod version as well. one of the few pedals with a decent reverse reverb (modeled after the old srv-2000).

i just wish they'd make a killer od/dist/bit crusher pedal in the same 500 line with the same programmability set.

If you're looking for something that can do the basic digital delay thing, but then a ton of other cool things, check out the Meris Polymoon. For delays, I have that as my digital, and then the El Capistan for the tapey analogy sounds. You can run both parts of the delay signal (the beginning or end) through a bunch of different LFO shapes that affect pitch and such, there's a decent flanger you can use, and there's also this feature called Dimension where you can smear the delay for ambienty washy goodness. I think the pedal's based, in part, on the old stacked rack delays that Zappa and Holdsworth used to use.

I was wondering about using it to split the Side Step's Tap Tempo into three signals to fire the expression inputs of my Tremolemonessence, Count To Five and ... maybe chorus or delay or ???
