Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Are you kidding me??!! You were in that band???!!!! Bill and Nels were just posting about that band the other day. It seems Julius' compositions and such have just been released, along with lots of other information from his life as a musician. That must have been a dream. Whoa man. Yes.

i missed them posting. fb?

anyway, yeah. nels’ twin bro had done an earlier tour with julius. years later, julius wanted to put together something electric. nels and i had been playing in a rock band plus some improv things (one of which was with alex). i got the call. first gigs were in sf. the band was julius, alex, nels, jumma santos (congas) and me. when i met julius, he said, “this ain’t a jazz gig.” okay, sounds like no walking. they ended up doing another gig without me and alex asked why. julius: “he doesn’t walk!” alex: “you told him it wasn’t a jazz gig!” i got rehired. we did a shorty euro tour with the og band; recorded a live alb. (i was still on 4-string; 1984)

second tour was with the og band and bill. six weeks of mayhem. (1985; i was on 6-string now.)

i totally regret that this was not legit recorded cause we were doing some new stuff, i think. oh well!

third tour was with allan jaffe instead of bill; jumma off the gig. last tour of the band.

I watched for like 10 minutes, and i don't get what it does, it chops up samples in its on way? randomizes? is it like artificial intelligence? is it doing things that you couldn't with say, ableton live?

It functionally does the same thing. It’s the sequencing protocol and step entry that is unique. The functions are quite similar to other devices and software.

The steps arrange vertically instead of horizontally, which is the most obvious difference. It has some interesting ways of copying and pasting patterns and inserting randomization.

Loopop has a good explanation. His video is lengthy but has time stamps so you can jump to key topics of interest.

The first 5 minutes is pretty comprehensive.

Catching up on the thread...my small crew of basses:

full?d=1551494780.jpg

the one in the middle (36" scale) is about to be sold to pay for a 32" scale Carl Thompson. I've also got a 5 string (E - C 32") coming from Carl at some point in the future. Been waiting on that one for a while...no clue when I will get it (which is how it goes).

Lately, I've been playing more tabletop setups of pedals. I got a Mattoverse double gate drone that I run through a Mattoverse kick drum into CooperFX Outward into CooperFX Arcades (which is pretty fricken unreal!) into Chase Bliss Blooper. It's glorious and super fun. My daughter has started getting into it too. She records some stuff with the blooper, mangles it and bleeps over it...

made this little ditty with that setup for FeedbackFriday:

so, bill frisell.

Okay Steuart, you definitely win the internet for today with that gig, holy crap! That sounds like a pantload of fun.

I never had the pleasure of playing with Bill, but I've been following his career since before he even had a career: I saw him in a concert in Boston in 1977 shortly after he got out of Berklee, but before he'd started playing with Eberhard Weber or Paul Motian. And even then you could tell he had a gift, a uniquely expressive touch on the instrument. I remember turning to my roommate during the show and saying "this guitarist is incredible, how is he not famous?" Ten years later, boom.

the band was julius, alex, nels, jumma santos (congas) and me.

Jumma Santos, wow. There's a name I have only ever heard once before...but that one time is on one of my favorite albums ever, Michael Gibbs' The Only Chrome Waterfall Orchestra.

As threatened, I got an expander cable for my OneSpot power supply, so now I can use more than one stompbox simultaneously while quarantined away from my pedalboards. Looks like for the foreseeable future this will be my rig for solo bedroom recordings:

In other news, the improvising trio I'd been working with is going to attempt to use JamKazam for some online collaboration. I still can't convince myself that I have it set up properly on my laptop, so it may be a while before I know if that's a valid platform for realtime internet musical performances. We shall see...

basically, i got lucky. good to have good friends.

gig was a ton of fun. it’s totally the case of “i wish i knew then what i know now.” still, i guess i did okay.

yeah, bill’s done all right. ;)

jumma (possibly under different names) allegedly also player on bitches brew and with hendrix at woodstock (i’m not sure if that’s true).

btw, when you were in boston, did you hear michael gregory jackson? i heard some of his stuff with oliver lake and his sound reminded me a bit of bill’s. mighta been cause they were both using an sg around that time? trying to figure out the chronology.

The name doesn't ring a bell at all ...which is surprising, because I just Googled him, and I'm quite fond of the music by seemingly every single person he's ever recorded or performed with! Someone new to add to my playlist, yay!

he’s really done some interesting stuff check out the lake trio with him.

he moved to l.a. recently. so we’ve become friendly. drove him home from namm. he’s done a lot of crazy stuff. cool dude.

I have had success w jamkazam. They recently put out a go fund me to enhance the platform.

Sound samples of this set up??

i wanted to circle back to the community vs. statement thing.

in our time, one way to build community is via some recorded or other digital media. how else is someone in england who has similar interests gonna be able to learn about you—or vice versa (or california and vermont, for that matter)? (maybe think of it as virtual touring?)

on the other side, when you get up on stage, i think you’re making a statement that you belong there and have something to offer to the people who are listening.

if you monetize it, it possibly doubles the statement aspect (?).

anyway other thoughts…

I think you bump into a generational divide with digital recordings and splitting community from statement. Those who developed and matured in an age before digital sharing probably see these two things very differently from a younger generation who don’t see a line of demarcation, or who might see the line with a different definition and importance.

possibly.

i would probably need a bit more clarification from you on that.

my contention is to record and document and put it out into the world. to me, the only statement is “this is what i’m doing.” my hope is that people listen and find it interesting; buying is probably third or fourth on the list and never expected. if i’m lucky, someone will contact me and we’ll discover some common ground.

i have friends who are slightly younger (3-4 years) who are adamant about not letting full sets get up on youtube. i have other friends who are older (10 years) and unconcerned about that—they want it out there.
