I've long given up on the idea of an album as a revenue stream. I look at it more as promo and for just forcing myself on the unwilling masses. All 2 of em.

Good point about the election @emjazz, except we may not know the result yet even by then. So that might drag on. There probably is no "good" time to release music right now.

Bandcamp does generally produce more serious engagement with artists among a small number of people than the other options that exist at the moment. And for some, a bit of sustainable revenue through subscriptions etc (but you have to be the kind of artist who puts out enough material to make it worthwhile). I've never sold much there, nor really tried to, but Steve Lawson has written quite a bit about this, with numbers to back it up. I am in no way a typical music consumer but it's true that while I subscribe to a streaming service, Bandcamp is mostly where I find out about new music. And talking with people on social media.

I may want to do a solo bass thing but I dont have enough tools (re...pedals) to do an adequate job for what I would jave in mind.
Ill have to let my mind spin on this , maybe I can make something with what I already have. Gear must not be an obstacle, that’s a horrible excuse IMO.
I'd have to do it post prod in Ableton, this tirn down the fun level to zero.

it helps to sit down. some guys can do it standing up, but i’ve literally lost my balance at times when i did that (short and hwavy basses). and now i have more foot controls, so sitting is necessary.

at some point, though, i lean over and play the pedals with my hands.

what’s really fun is running the bass rig and the ipad rig at the same time (which i do in my duo toques).

(btw: my description was for the method: the improv had elements low range + reverb; other things were pretty much what i said. ah late-night, post-tequila posting.)

imo: look at what you have and figure how to use it. and experiment. maybe you’ll get something you like, maybe it’ll just be practice to find out what you need—or both.

My view of an album is that it's a way to document my efforts. It's a goal to reach for that helps to keep you focused on the project until it's done, and afterwards you can "prove" that you actually did it. A milestone basically.

My band dragged their feet for a while but we finally recorded an album; afterwards they were all glad we did it. Bands come and go, people quit or move on, and all those hours of rehearsal, writing, and gigs, just become a blur of memories if you don't document the results.

I've never had any expectation of making back the money.

Even tours where a crap shoot.
We had to pay a booker in Europe just to get his contact list to play over there.
He provided list he got $$, by basically doing nothing.
Why paid , came home barely breaking even.

Dropped it all cuz even our sound guy made more than us. ( one of the many reasons)

So now I put out my own crap all by myself.

there are three loops, and there’s octave up and there’s reverse. plus i’m playing counter lines over it, so just mixing and matching, turning stuff on and off to create simultaneous events.

one loop is sort of percussive with a early reflection reverb. the chordal thing is either a panning trem or a chorus and then morphing between a reverse delay in one channel and a straight delay in the other, via exp pedal (effect level up or down). both “solo” things are a the elements into a weird reverb (maybe some reverse?).

all boss 500 series stuff.

btw, two dittos, with manglers in between can be really effective.

i’ve used a boss dd-6 to great effect between two loopers.

i usually start with the effect turned on, but with the blend at complete dry.

using a really tight delay with a lot of feedback creates gnarly flange. riding the time and feedback knobs can get a lot of interesting stuff.

if you are looking for fame and fortune from music, I hope you are also playing lotto because the only way you are going to get noticed is if you win the lotto and waste millions promoting your music. You'd literally have better odds of getting struck by lightning with a key tied to a kite in a storm.

do it cause it makes you feel good. do it cause you love it. do it cause it feels good to complete work or put something out there or whatever...but dangit...don't do it cause you wanna be rich and/or famous...

This video probably doesn't have much mind blowing stuff for the regulars in these parts, but at about 5:06 there is an interesting bit on Additive Synthesis and how to do some sound design in Ableton with Operator.

The graphics in this are pretty slick too. If you know anyone learning about harmonics and overtones, this is pretty helpful to pass along.

I like this guy - first video I saw was his review of the Moog Subharmonicon, then I've watched some other ones too, like the intro to modular synths and one on songwriting/production. It's got the kind of hyper cutting that the youngsters go for but also seems backed up by actual knowledge and experience - what a concept!
