checking in on this. it's a little longer than i can do in one sitting, so i'm gonna have to do in small installments. sounds cool.

when you mentioned ucsd, i checked up on that. turns out he and i have a fair amount of mutual friends (in fact, the first pic on his site is with my old pal jeff kaiser), and he and i have discs on sister labels (both run by jeff k). so it's the proverbial small world.

It’s a lot. There are definitely highs and lows. I’m gonna try to mark my favorite spots, which will be used for an edited version. Feel free to jump around and let me know any time marks of particular interest.

It is a very small world. Six degrees of separation and all :)

I liked your post but almost disagree haha...But yes, me and my friends talk about the 90’s treks and quote / meme repeatedly. Although a tad dated I still love ds9 to the nth degree after the campiness / too cleanliness of tng and voyager...
I actually don’t mind discovery although it should almost just lose the Star Trek prefix... hoping this season gets better.

I made an Inignot synth.
It’s a square wave into a filter.
There’s a delay, phaser, and reverb on the patch.
The mouth is a 1/3/5/8 keyboard, with a root/range control in the left eye being modulated by an LFO and quantized to a minor scale.

you mean like when ds9 revisited the tribbles by going back onto the enterprise and having to be part of the crew... probably old and new fans pleased for that one haha

have to say of all the intro music ds9 kicks arse as well... it’s slow and not “exiciting” but it’s just epic in its own way to introduce the station and the cast as an intro it For a minute or however long it takes, it just works and is still stuck in my head 25 or however many years later :)

for those that don’t know what I’m taking about

If you take out the last 5 or 6 episodes I think ds9 is one of my favorites.
Easily the one with the best character development.

I think I was in college during DS-9's run and lost track of the story arcs, so I just gave up on it and never went back. I should give it a try someday.

As for music and sound design, I agree TOS had a great sound design. Something about the primitive synthesis technology of the 60s made for a lot of creativity. Dr. Who was another example, and even before that, my favorite example of all was the 1950s film Forbidden Planet. In that film you can't really figure out where the soundtrack stops and the sound effects begin sometimes, it's all just one integrated whole. It was all made on things like tape decks and amplifier feedback loops and so on.

I've been using MIDI since 1984, but if I ever have to integrate it into my bass playing you can just shoot me. :) It's a fabulously versatile technology (aside: a buddy of mine is one of the architects of MIDI 2.0, and that looks like it's going to be even more versatile! Can't wait...) but the entire control environment in terms of both planning and executing is so not what I want the bass to be about. If I were doing live performances as a synthesist and/or an "onstage audio manipulator" I would embrace MIDI in a heartbeat -- mostly because I already own a ton of MIDI hardware -- but as soon as you strap a bass around my neck I want live in a very different conceptual and gestural paradigm.
