Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Daniel Barbiero is an upright player local to DC who does ambient/electronic stuff on his bass. I've been on the bill with him a few times and he was a pretty cool guy. Haven't seen him lately (or anyone else for that matter) but he's got stuff out there on youtube, etc. The times I've seen him he was in a group with a couple of other guys doing electronic stuff.

Anyone doing anything ambient with an upright? I just managed to acquire my first ever DB in a trade.

Not really ambient but maybe some Tord Gustafson trio?
Other ECM artists maybe?

Cinematic orchertra?

Depends on whatever "ambeint" means.

Do the many esteemed members of this thread have any suggestions for pedal order when it comes to some of the more interesting noisemakers? I took advantage of Black Friday and picked up a bunch of new pedals (Tensor, Particle, MOOD, Pitch Fork+, Enzo, Outward, Slo, and a borrowed Fabrikat) that I'm hoping to integrate into a more experimental board (currently has an Ictineo, Silver Deluxe, Canyon, Res Filter Eq, Terriformer, Locust Star, Synth Voice Deluxe - these new pedals are replacing others). I'm hoping for some insight into where to start with an order, understanding that I may thereafter want to swap some pedals around depending on goal.

My band does mostly shoegaze and post-rock but I'm looking to use this board more in a planned ambient side project.

I'm counting 15 pedals in that post.
So 15x14x13x12x11x10x9x8x7x7x5x4x3x2 = 1307674368000 possiblies of those 15 pedals if you use them all at once.

So how about experimenting with them and find out what works best for you?

I'd start with just one at a time.

Thanks for the welcome! I've participated in the thread in the distant past, but am aiming to get a lot more weird these days. I spent the past two weeks rereading this thread from the beginning to learn more about what folks are doing in this space. Like the best things, I have learned a lot along the way.

I expect to try things out, but am still hoping for a beginning configuration to start with. I've actually played through all of them individually already but still don't have a sense of how well they interact, or not.

I don't do quite as well as some in playing in a "sandbox" - I learn better when I have some initial soft boundaries to start from.

I just automatically assumed someone would have already mentioned Eberhard Weber by the time I got around to the end of this thread.
Of course, the fine line between "ambient" and "ECM, aka drenched-in-reverb" can sometimes be vast.

Things that actually alter the sound should be at the beginning, like the Enzo - mine's the second pedal in the chain, after my Mel 9. i don’t connect ew with ambient.

old school ambient-ish ecm might be bennie maupin and julian priester, but they’re really coming from the jazz side of things.

the samples are joe’s thing. i asked, he said “Bastl microgranny,” which is apparently a granular sample player.

yeah. i’m not even sure who’s doing what with the electronics most of the time. it’s live, but there’s a bit of sampling. all i know for sure is 12-string bass and fretless 6-string.
