Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

@lordradish — sorry to about the ears. Keep us posted and bon courage. You can still be musical no matter what happens to your body.

I have mild tinnitus that I’ve had since childhood. Years of rock haven’t helped. My ears ring more when I’m tired. Which is kind of all the time right now because of the drugs I’m on.

On listening. Been working my way through the 2020 Bandcamp lists. My wife and I are on break and sleeping in and then sit on the couch after breakfast and listen to a list. Lots of great stuff in jazz. I don’t think their critics and I share much taste in ambient, which is today’s listen, but it’s always good to check out new stuff.

Music critics, lets just say that I despise all them without exception.
From cork sniffers to failed musicians to loser taste makers.

With my last band some « big » online mags wanted to get payed for them to review our record.
%^@&@# you bud,

One Steve Coleman album changed my life in the late 90s, the way of the Cypher.
1\5 stars on all music........I rest my case.

My 2 grumpy punk cents

In my day job, there’s this sort of gospel that music journalism is Great Writing. I never could get into it, didn’t see the big deal with Lipstick Traces, etc. But I buy most of my music on Bandcamp and can’t complain when it comes with a playlist to check out and form my own opinions. I also follow labels that put out stuff I like.

hi, been laying low.

last few weeks of listening: early skinny puppy, all 16 beethoven strings quartets, jinjer (what can i say?), brubeck's "time out" (still don't totally get the attraction), michael formanek's "extended animation," supersilent 4, monteverdi.

mostly i've been listening to what i've been working on.

hearing damage, ugh. so far i've been pretty lucky (which is shocking—and knock on wood). probably cause i haven't played super-loud gigs for quite a long time and i stopped using earbuds. good luck to all of you afflicted with this.

critics: seems to me a lot of music criticism shows more about the reviewer and/or is designed to tell you how cool the reviewer is. some choice ones i've had:

saying it would be scary to listen to alone in a dark house.

saying it was good music to wash dishes to.

comparing me negatively to someone who has a very different intent/style.

complaining that an album that was written around other soloists didn't have bass solos by me (apparently if you're a bass palyed and do a "solo" album, that's what's expected).

by the way, slominsky's "lexicon of musical invective" is a classic compilation of contemporary critics taking down people like beethoven. recommended for some good chuckles.

Invalid Link Removed

nowadays, most critics know virtually nothing about music and most jazz folks do *not* get paid, so it's a labor of love for them, misguided as some can be.

best retort to a critic:

“I am in the smallest room of the house. I have your review in front of me. Soon it will be behind me.”

Hey, welcome back. Hope all is well

Re: Time out. I’m allergic to Paul Desmond’s sax tone. So, I cant stand that record.
In order to play any of those songs on a cocktail or wedding gig I required a $$ tip. And I’m not joking. Once got a 20$ to play Take 5.....ZZZZzzzzzzz

Re: critics, we seem to agree on most points, but once again I fail to put my ideas into words in a clear and concise way. (Lifelong struggle right there, brain goes faster than the words....)

Listening or watching Jinjer’s singer?
;)

“I am in the smallest room of the house. I have your review in front of me. Soon it will be behind me.”

You shouldn't do that in the pantry.

Current listening:
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Samhain - Whole catalog
Various psytrance collections
RSA Podcast (Real Synthetic Audio) - lots of (g)raver goth industrial stuff
Erica Synths module demos :)

... oh yeah, the Fusion VCO has been ordered. I'm curious how the tube crunch will sound on my basses using the "audio in" jack.

I have hearing loss pretty badly in the treble area... that and makes for being tone deaf without my hearing aids... not the best for a musician! ( I can recognise when something is sharp or flat but not by how much or when it’s in the mix :(

my listening has been the usual suspects ... parkway drive, Marilyn Manson (only cos the slow rock aspect is good to listen to and my kids tend to fall asleep to it) kingdom of giants, northlane, architects, void of vision... recently got into the algorithm earlier this year / last year and some Facebook ad then decided o should like alyag kind of generic edm but more “metal” influenced I guess, lots of aggressive sounds.
Oh and re listening to anything with Sean Malone on it (RIP) - kind of moved on from cynic but they were a massive influence to me around 2010 or so.

Word to the wise about the Skitter. I’m getting a hair of occasional unpleasant clipping when driving a hot signal into it, particularly with bass boosted. I confirmed with Champion Leccy that this can happen, and that older models are even a bit more sensitive to this. It’s not unusable by any means. Just be mindful.

The flip side is that there’s a dab of mojo the “dry” signal path adds to the signal coming in. It’s not a full blown preamp saturation effect, but it’s noticeable. I also confirmed that I wasn’t hearing an illusion from gain levels changing. It won’t change your life, but if you’ve got a Skitter, consider the possibility of using it as a boost and engaging it with only the dry signal.

Didn’t see Skinny Puppy coming! I really loved the early stuff when it came out. Struck me as very original.

Hearing loss? I feel lucky, but it was because of wise choices. Hoping for the best for @lordradish

Attempted to do winter music. Possibly Christmas-ish.

Actually, I agree on the HH!

haha. yeah. mind, cleanse and vivsectvi are pretty great in my book. really interesting sonics. i even have b sides and such.

glad to see you. how was the out-of-town gig?

It was...fine? A socially distanced ‘safe’ gig is better than no gig, but it’s still awkward to do.

@dukeorock
nice track. and holy crap, that graphic.

@ugly_bassplayer
you’re wrong, needs more cowbell.

Ha! Probably the last 20-30 jams I’ve posted on YouTube use photographs by my friend @JJR58 (Jeffrey Rose). Great person and I love his photos

Ok then.
:)

I never want to "critique" someone's mix because I never know what the initial intent was.
Let's just agree to agree.

At least it's not like those records where Ed Thigpen had his rivot ride go SHHHHHHHHHJJJJJJJJJJJZZZZZZ!!!!!!
over everything on the tracks.

;)
