Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Don't expect all the tracks to sound like this though, cause I use a lot of different composition and recording methods for creating tracks for this project.

So even if all the tracks with this project is undeniably related in some way and from the same sort of universe the individual tracks between embraces a wide variety of different expressions.

Some are purely electronically founded, some are created from manipulated physically recorded tracks, which might include a lot of different instruments, or just one single one like in this case, some are hybrids between these two forms, some are ugly, unsettling, noisy and abrasive, while others are beautiful, comforting, calm and soothing, some are more drone than ambient, and some are more ambient than drone, and a few are almost closer to something that could be considered noise music, all sharing a common soul though, and most of them being in the darker and more experimental end of the musical spectrum.

So...the modular is up and running again finally. I've got a semi-permanent patch, though I am more and more convinced a hardware mixer or something will greatly improve my experience. The knobs are so tiny otherwise.

This is just a pair of pulsing drones, but I get messing around with FM, wave folding and shaping, and self-oscillating feedback from 3 different sources: Space Echo, Ibanez AD 202, and my Elle pedal (more audible towards the end), which, as predicted, sounds amazing with synth (thank you @emjazz ). Lots of different kinds of distortion too. Melodically: NOTHING happens.

Well, listened to my solo bass thing.
Made the choice of " best takes ".
And it definitely does not hold up as a whole.
Not album worthy. Not by a long shot.
About 3.5 hours of recorded stuff and many hours invested.

I guess I learned some things during this 4 month process. Still sucks, but hey wadaya gonna do. It is what it is.

Here's to failing hard, getting back up and trying again. Will make adjustments and take another shot at it, but I definitely need some time off from doing this.

I can maybe share a few takes on my soundcloud if anyone is remotely interested.
Nothing mind-blowing though.

Thoughts go out to everyone in the USA now...ouch.

two things:

1. consider it time well spent: even if you don't like things, it gives you a chance to recognize things you like and things that you want to work on. all positive in my book.

2. depending how recently you've been listening to it, some distance might help "objectivity" . . .

I agree that it was time well spent.

Quebec is also going into serious lockdown Saturday which is a different kind of shaged up. I’m not even sure my wife and I will be able to use our practice space.

I lived in DC briefly in grad school. I’d say unbelievable, but it’s sadly believable.

We havent practiced in months.
The whole world is FUBAR.....well it always has been.....but now....we have minute by minute coverage of the ^%(^$^*^&$%#$&%$^*%*,

Fired up the old Black System II with a Fusion VCO. I do love the wavetables going through the Fusion VCO for some extra grit. My phone recording didn't pick up the deeper bass going on in this patch, but I expected that (it's also a tad late to push much volume in my apartment).
Just a rough idea/jam for this crew to see what's shakin' at the Casa de Monsta.

Well I managed a bit of “messing around today”... and lost faith in solderless fullstop. Remade the 3 monkeys which is meant to be the easiest to make with no stripping just screw on ends and that’s it and still had a failed signal path. Going to invest in those ebs flat things I think cos so many makers make plugs that are too big for pedals with multiple inlets/outlets next to each other (whats with that?? Surely they would know this is a thing! My pancake style cables which are awesome at saving space have too big a head and can’t be used on anything stereo / with a loop etc)...

Anyway that’s my mini rant and unhappy waste of time and money.

I would never gig a board with solderless cables. I did once or twice, had problems everytime. (georgeL cables, IMO they suck, cost a crap load of$$ and are totally unreliable,)
One gig it was no signal 4 secs before the downbeat. Unplugged everything and went straight into my amp.

Brutal. My wife only started a few years ago, but she played piano for many years. In about 10 minutes behind a kit she had better limb independence than I do. Bonus: she can sing and play. Also, apropos of the other conversation, she liked soldering cables when I redid my board. Pretty much the perfect woman.

We were in a band together, and the bandleader broke the band up to avoid having to put me under pressure... until he called me back for some gigs a few weeks later. One of 10 billion reasons I'm glad she's gone.
