I was into Dokken for a while in the late 80s / early 90s. I still like a couple of their songs when I'm in a hair metal mood. I also think 80s Yes is better than it gets credit for. I regret nothing.

I used to watch his guitar instructional video a lot as a kid (as well as Billy Sheehan's). I was so into their sounds and their abilities. They really got me excited about becoming a musician. Say what you will about that period and style of music, but they all were really great musicians.
For better or worse those musicians at that time are why I play the way that I do now...a bit notey and super melodic.
Meeting Billy was an amazing experience. I wasn't a fan of the albums, but watching that guy play live was amazing. I never saw him with Paul, but I bet that duo was insanely fun in concert.
See I look at a lot of these guys as great musicians who played really crappy music.
@lordradish sorry to hear it, but it sounds like you have the right attitude. And you can still make music, which is what matters.
don’t disagree. some aren’t as great as others. (does having a lot of facility equal “great”?)

How do you guys think the arturia micro freak rates as a synth?
It just had a new firmware update adding a couple cool features.
I'm kinda sick and tired of messing around with soft synths and was looking for a cool hardware one.
Atm my work flow is pretty much use soft synth, then dump it in my SP to start creating. Since I can tweak the sounds with real hardware on my SP.
Also open to some suggestions, but I dont have the budget to go as big as the hydrasynth for example.

I have Plaits, which is the basis of the oscillator in the Microfreak, and the range of sounds it can make is really great. Takes modulation very well. Each synthesis model is like a whole patch (potentially).

But my point is you get everything that module does in the micro freak plus a filter, modulation and keyboard.
just looked at the specs. looks really good.
possiblr drawbacks are number of lfos and voices. but has polyaftertouch, and had cv connectivity, so a good thing if some of your synth boxes have that as well. capacitive “keyboard” could either be a drag or great.
sequencer and touch strip also pluses.
can be used to drive a soft synth with poly aftertouch, so you’d also be happy with that (assuming thst the ss will accept that input).
looks like it’s really portable and the price is good.
pretty sure the guy who was a main driver of the hydra was at arturia and may have had a hand in this.
from my pov, looks like a good tool for you.
what do reviews say? do you like the sound clips?
Reviews are pretty much unanimously positive.
I think the capacitive keyboard would not be an issue and the poly aftertouch would be awesome.
I dig the sounds I’m hearing in demos. (I have no clue how « versatile » it gets though.)
4 voice polyphonie is cool , considering most others at the price point are mono.
I can kinda cheat that and stack samples to make huge chordal voicings.

I’m saying the oscillator inside the microfreak IS the Plaits. You def want the microfreak, but if you want documentation on how it makes sounds, the Plaits info will kelp. You definitely don’t want to go Euro. It is a money pit.

Was watching an interview with Reznor and Cortini, was very interesting but they came across as such cork sniffing gear snobs it was hard to take them seriously.
For them it was the real deal analog or euro or nothing.
Common, every body can afford a 300, 000$ Buchla full wall module.
And we all know that on a computer everything is crap and sterile.

And while I’m here, what small format mixers are people using? I had a Mackie 1402VLZ I bought used for peanuts in the 90s that chapped out a couple years back. (over 20 years is not a bad run for a piece of SMD gear used in non ideal conditions). I could get another 1402 but would love 3 sends instead of 2. Could get a Presonus Studiolive but no idea on build quality and reliability. We have a Soundcraft in our space which is good but I find it crowded for my fat fingers. Allen and Heath Zed 14 just a bit too tall.
How many mic preamp ? How many inputs needed?
How many AUx sends needed?
Sub bus?
Onboard FX?
Digital USB??
wish list:
3 aux sends with pre-post fader options (might live with 2)

10 input channels or more 6 mic pres is nice but not essential. I have outboard and won’t use a ton of mics.
Would love to be able to output to computer per track but not essential. I have no use for 2-4 channel USB.
