Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Not ambient (again!), but here’s a jam I just did on my Octatrack. Live sampled on bass riff into the sampler (no effects going in), then sliced and mangled that sample into this jam. Recorded live into Logic. No edits or additional effects

You're definitely NOT helping my unhealthy GAS for all things EMPRESS!

I just recently got the Empress Tremolo... Tap-Tempo, all trems should have it. Wish I could fit Tappity-abilatty to my Dr Sci Tremolemonessence...

As for the superduperlooperscooperfuper...

Hmmm.
Looper before or after effects...
Should I loop wet signals, or dry ones with effects on the loops.
Choices.

TRANSLOCATOR !
FX loop-switcher that'll put your Recording-Looper at the beginning or end (or whermiddlever)...
(Check out Application #6 in the above linked PDF)
LOOP Da LOOP baby!

I love ambient music and especially synths, but this is neither. Textural, yeah!
As a bass player, I find myself influenced by a guitarist, esp for his rhythmic use of delay, I also like his bassist, Adam Clayton. I feel this is somewhere in between the two(albeit less talented!), and the first thing I ever recorded by myself a few years ago.

The Boss RE-20 definitely makes the Tech21's Tri-Ac distortion sound much better than it was. It feels really amateurish posting this, but I still like it all these years:)

I shared this on the pedalboard thread, so I hope it will be a good first post in here too. Maybe a couple of tweaks here and there, but I’m happier with this than I have ever been with any iteration of my pedalboard. This is going into an Aguilar AG 700 with a GS212, aside from the few times I run direct. I’m playing different configurations of 4 string Jazz basses and a Warwick $$ 5er into it.

Nice. I like the fade at the end.

I nerded out and made a spreadsheet for my next performance, showing each segment by number of minutes, which loops should fade in/out, which presets I should have on the Echo and Reverb pedals, and which kits I should be triggering. It all fits on a legal size sheet of paper. Even if I don't read it at the show, it was helpful to map things out ahead of time, so I can think more about the improvisation sections, and not worry about remembering everything.

I'm thinking I need to get into MIDI programming the Empress pedals so I can trigger presets from Ableton.

I’ve been feeling something similar. Gotta pull my MIDI chops together. Good idea on the spreadsheet. I do something similar with my Elektron machines since I don’t use any sort of song mode. Some jams involve a whole lot of memorization

BTW, I’m doing a fun, goofy little thing at the moment. Over at the Elektron users forum they sometimes set up these writing/remix challenges based on certain parameters. This challenge I’m taking part in involves the movie “Firestarter,” by Stephen King. The objective is to sample as much as possible from the film itself and compose a piece between 80-130 BPM (mine is 112 BPM) and the style has to be loosely within the synthwave/vaporwave thing. Not exactly my thing, but I thought it would be fun to step out of my comfort zone. I decided that I would only use samples from the movie with no additional stuff, just to make it more interesting. The tune is coming along ok...may do 2-3 versions. While listening to vaporwave stuff, mostly ironic 80’s inspired cheese, I did stumble onto some interesting music...this record is actually quite good

I’ve got one. It sounds great too me. I love the reverbs, delays, and modulation. I’m not really a distortion guy so I haven’t really explored that side.

As far as blend it is possible to route things in parallel so that your low end is preserved.

I don’t care for menu diving so that is a downside for me, though I must say it is one of the best and most logical layouts I have experienced. Usually things are accessible with few clicks.

So I would recommend trying it, though I am thinking of selling mine to help fund a dream bass purchase.

I always find writing stuff out helps my brain clarify things. Sometimes even just talking it out, saying it aloud helps, but definitely writing it down...

I wonder if my Empress Trem does MIDI... Why yes, yes of course it does! I got a Disaster Area Midi Controller as a SSanta gift from one of the Breeders, I'm still not using it to its fullest potential with the M5/FI/AlterEgo...

Hey, further to working with a looper (or any other effect or chain thereof) and transmorgrifying it from one place on your board to another... well I gave you the link to the DIY earlier, though I knew there are commercially available products also available I couldn't think of any at the time, but the One Control Salamandra just popped up in another thread, and there's also similar stuff to the GGG Translocator available from RoadRageProGear (Canada), Loopi (Australia, IIRC) and a couple out of the US I still can't remember... Check out bizs such as Decibel11, they make some cool switchers and mayy have some translocatio-ratio thingy too. The dosey-do stuff is out there, but doesn't get the press 'cause it's not "glam" in most pedal-users eyes.

Dagnabbit! I thought I was clicking on rough mix of your FireStarter Challenge Submission.

Good link nonetheless, but please do post the Firestarter Sub here! SVP.
