Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

It makes me wonder how guys like Loopop learn the features of so many bits of gear so fast. The learning rate to absorb it and produce a video and move on to the next piece of gear to do the same is respectable.
Give me a full work weeks paid with a pedal or synth. Plus access with the company and devs.......
I guarantee you things will go wayyyyyyy faster than fumbling with a crap manual and YT vids.

The Micro freak has an online manual but they update it along with firmware.

And no, i still haven’t read it.

3h video......ZZZZZZzzzzzz

in three parts.

watch in 20-minute increments (or less).

if you want to learn things it can do, it’s a good resource.

line i said, i’ve already learned tricks on facbook that aren’t in the manual.

on drum tracks, coarse tune past +/-24 makes the whole track go into reverse. (found this by accident, but was corroborated on fb.)

how to use the “4th motion knob” (virtual, not physical).

using the motion record on the coarse tune means you can have track go back and forth into reverse. very fun.

How’s the drum programming on that thing after spending a little time on it?
Would definitely like to load one up with tons of drum hits and bang up some tracks.

Can it sequence drums unquantized?

Agreed and understood that being paid to do the job and having an existing understanding helps. I was thinking “how does he do that?” more in terms of “what is his process?” Particularly with deeper gear, with lots of menu diving and unique or uncommon features. I’m curious how he breaks down the manual and starts digesting it. Does he read it cover to cover, or jump around? Does he make notes, and how?

yes to unquantized. you can also scootch unquantized stuff around (i learned that from the video manual ;)).

i like my drum programs to sound like drum machines, so i may be the wrong guy to ask.

but, you have the roland tr-style programming plus programming live playing—and you can have both on the same drum track.

i like having complementary drum tracks that i can bring and out of a mix on the fly. this does this well.

different effects/motion recording on different tracks.

it does a lot so far.

Indeed confirms my thoughts of being an awesome tool for live drums.
Any FX available to use on live tracks??

The ability to pull in \out tracks with the fader is simply awesome.

RE; quantized
I’m so used to punching in my own patterns that’s why I always ask the “quantize” question.
Way back I layered drum hits and did that exact same thing with a midi controller pad in Ableton.

Man, I love making beats......but I completely suck at making anything “normal”.

there are three *assignable* physical knobs per track (which can be drums, synth or loop). those knobs can be delay/reverb send, filter controls, tuning, panning or “source,” which i haven’t quite dealt with yet. you can control these live, recorded motion or programming in step mode.

there’s a fourth virtual “knob” that you control in the step mode only.

in addition, each track has its own effect: filters, phasors, flangers, distortion, bit crusher, ring mod. (these maybe be able to be controlled by the source knob?). each also has its own delay/reverb send.

the delay and reverb are global for all those sends from what i can tell, but are pretty programmable, using the standard boss models.

TUning??
WOw can pitch drums up and down.....that’s an awesome feature. (Distortion and Bit crush is also very cool for live use, makes big changes in textures.)
Definitely I good investment for your workflow and live machines.
(from what I understand after hanging around for quite a while)

Ok 6 mins of sample time:
2 mins of kick samples
2 of snares
2 of HH, cymbals and various percussions.

:)

Well, I’m not having much luck with the LPG. I had expectations based on the LPG on the 0 Coast, and this isn’t doing that. I’ll keep working with it today. The Joystick 2 is a huge upgrade over the 1 that I already had. I just scratched the surface with it.

Sticking with Erica seems like a good idea. I love the sounds. The next case I buy might be non Erica but I’m tempted to stay with the brand. I feel the compatibility will be best. There’s too many stories about weird conflicts with power supplies and screw sizes being off.

IME, the real issue is with mixed brands is expected CV. Does a VCO want to see -3-+7, -5-+5, or 0-10? Does a digital module respond to negative voltages? Lots of time wasted figuring that out in my early days, and often it's not even clear in a manual.

tuning: *live* tuning is not per drum, it's per per track. tr-8s has live tuning per drum, i think.

per pad/instrument you can program tuning, decay, panning and a few other things when making the kit for the track.

for you, the sampling time is probably a problem. since there are hundreds of pcm files of drum sounds, which you can mix and match into kits, it's not really a problem for me (there are probably four different 808 kits, which you can then mangle; same with 909, 606 . . . plus more regular drum/percussion [even orchestral] sounds). i'm not sure you'd need 2 minutes of everything?

show and tell. a little earlier than i would have wanted to do . . .

the tracks are just me learning to use the thing.

each audio file is me showing a set of component tracks (i.e., 5 tracks = a complete set for a "song")clean and then with a few of the knob assignment/manipulations. some of the tracks have recorded knob motions. there are both drum and tone (synth) tracks.

then i "perform" (improvise) a little ditty using the component tracks and some of the functions like track mute, fader and knob manipulations.

these are only for show and tell, not real tunes!

I think I’ve got this LPG figured a bit better. It’s cool but not epic. The joystick 2 is epic. That and the VCO2 are really fun in the system.

All those are stock samples?

Edit....
Well the bass is officially in pieces and retired.
