Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

what are people looking for in a dirt pedal?

Earth tones.

Lots of compost and organic matter such as composted leaves and ground or shredded, aged bark. Has to have enough organic material so that the tone is neither sandy nor compressed too much. At least a 10-10-10 rating of Potassium Nitrogen and Phosphorous. PH should be 6–7, I don't mind if it's slightly alkaline, but I stay away from heavy clay. Lots of trace minerals to enhance harmonics.

I also like Delayney.
Really, just some gritty re-peats, acidic boggy peats a gain and a gain.

Who else is running a stereo board, here?

I try to run stereo but it's a pain in the ass because so many of the pedals I like (and own) are not stereo.

Then there are the ones that are mono in and stereo out, like my chorus pedal and some others. So I can get from a mono signal to stereo, but only if I run that pedal near the beginning of the chain. No muy bueno.

Add to that the fact that I often want to use my Rickenbacker, which is 2-channel output but you really want to run each channel through a different signal chain, as it's not truly a "stereo" bass, just separate outs for each pickup.

It gets confusing at times. But I still manage a decent stereo output at times.

I've seen that video before, very entertaining and I like the band. I'm also glad to see Logan found a second career as a musician after his Wolverine days were over.

Mine is pretty-trouble free. I have a 10 channel bypass looper, 6 mono, 4 stereo. all the mono effects on those all the stereo on the other. I have to rethink a few things, though, as, with stereo, when the last half of your signal chain is stereo (and the last pedal is the Meris Mercury 7, which, even when used minimally, acts as a really nice stereo widener), I wonder how many stereo pedals really need to be in the stereo loop. Currently, I have 2 mono loops free. The 4 stereo loops are one with three delays(Particle, El Cap, Polymoon), Boss MD-500, Eventide H9, then the Mercury 7. All but the El Cap can be controlled by TRS midi with the qConnect, so the only thing that's a pain is the El Capistan, as I have to manually turn that pedal on or off. I wonder if I might just put it in a mono slot. I always wonder what the 'stereo' effect is of a certain pedal, and if it's worth the stereo slot. Like the El Cap... it doesn't have ping pong delay on it. It does have spring verb that I never use. So I really don't think I'd lose much if it's on a mono slot. I already put the stereo Enzo on a mono slot, because it didn't seem to add much, and again, it's still going through a bunch of other stereo effects.

It goes through 2 QSC 8.2's and an EV sub, something like 4000 watts, total. Sounds reeeeeal nice at the low, normal volume, and they're about 12 feet apart, so a nice spread.

I have a TC Electronics digital delay that does the stereo ping pong effect, but it's currently on my synth rig.

But my old 1980s Arion stereo chorus pedal is something I use all the time with both my bass and synth rig, it sounds fantastic and the stereo effect is pretty pronounced. It immediately makes whatever is going through it brighten up and punch through, and adds great color to the tone. It's an old plastic pedal I bought used, first one I ever bought as a teenager, so I try to be careful with it, but no other chorus I've tried sounds as good. It's mono in and stereo out, so it needs to be before any other stereo pedals. I think JHS made a clone of it I need to check out.

I'm gonna fire up the app and look at the settings for those and see if there's a gate I can turn off. If there is, I'll keep it, if not I'm gonna go for the Dr Scientist or the Way Huge.
I've tried the big box pickle.
Really cool fuzz that cuts.
Very different from my favorite TFR muff fuzz.

I thought it was very good. But I never used it in a band on recording session since inwas noodling on my buddies rig and pedal board.

Never tried the pork loin.
Not much help...but hey...

Edit: @lordradish
The reason that turned me off this one wwas that it had 2 internal trim pots.
Major Pain in the @$$ to tweak.

i’ll be interested to see if that’s it.

the elements has a lot of eq possibilities, which might help in your quest. i don’t know anything about the way huge pedal.

On Monday I picked up a used Grendel Drone Commander Eurorack version (actually traded a module I’m not using, so it was like it was “free”). I have the old ammo can version which is great, but sometimes I want more control. It’s also built better, easier on my hands, and has a better manual than most Eurorack. Very impressive. I need to spend some time learning it.

And then, immediately after that, I scored my first vaccine appointment for Friday. It’s a long wait for the 2nd in Quebec, but a month after the first, the doctor might let me run some indoor errands with a mask on....
