Everywhere but Canada seems to be emerging from the Covid Ice. I had a couple gigs not too long ago, lotsa people around the US and in various other parts of the world are starting to get gigs again. My friend in Western Canada echoes OoBay's frustration... Why am I moving back, again?

Alas, Alberta bound, for familial and other reasons. I don't know where the province ranks right now, but AB was the Covid capital per capita of Canada for a long time running. When I visited last summer the number of people there not practicing safe social measures was only beaten by Vancouver.

My AB friend's daughter who is at high-risk, finally got her first shot, and then will get the 2nd in ... 3 months ... WT Fudsicle? Jabs should be ... ahhh let's talk about Tacos, and a missing Fano JM4.

Dukeorock should call the police.

Then order an enchilada with flank steak that was marinated in a melange of lime juice, cane-sugar, fresh chilis, chopped red-cabbage, red-onion, and fresh cilantro. Squeeze some fresh lime on that sucker...

To be fair, the scarcity of vaccine in Canada isn't totally our fault. I mean, it is in the sense that the government sold off domestic vaccine production capacity a few decades back to a company that subsequently closed it because it's not...profitable. OTOH, people gathering in movie theatres and pubs with no masks on is just homegrown stupidity.

I am also high risk, and got my first shot yesterday. Feel a little crap today but just riding it out. My second shot? The first week of August.... And my wife is still not eligible for her first (she's high risk too but her ticket has not yet come up).

I remember when Robert Cray was first getting known and all these pundits were proclaiming him the New Voice Of The Blues® or some such BS...and my observation at that time was, "Robert Cray can sing -- verbatim -- 'I've got the blues' and I don't believe him. Whereas BB King can just play two notes on his guitar and I find myself thinking 'Holy crap, he's got the blues!!!' "

most of what passes for "blues" in the record biz often seems like it's based on wearing the right hat (robert c., joe b., etc.) and not depth of feeling.


re bb and the other old school guys.

i was always more of an albert king guy cause he was a little more gritty. had the opportunity to see him in a small club a few times. i was young and dumb and didn't get it all, but it made an indelible impression.

bb i saw a few times in l.a., royce hall and some other suburban places, and he always struck me as pretty show biz.

when i was touring in the mid-70s, the guy i was playing with opened for bb in lincoln (or omaha?), nebraska. very different type of show for a different audience demographic. amazing show. sanctified church stuff. bb knew his audiences.

during the set, he popped a string during the solo, pointed at the second guitar player to play, went to the wings, got a guitar string, starts stringing the guitar, band goes into the vocal section and he's singing his a@@ off while stringing the guitar. my jaw was on the floor.

in this band, i was playing rhythm guitar and could *sorta* play some blues solo stuff, which meant that i was basically strip-mining albert and bb. anyway, i know we were gonna be opening for bb and i'm praying that les doesn't call the blues tune cause, ya know, i'm stealing from bb and it's gonna be painfully obvious. needless to say he, he calls it. the crowd didn't boo, at least.

met bb at the airport the next morning. i get introduced. he's got a massive hand that i shake and he's, "nice to meet you young man." i'm suitably tongue tied.

somewhere i have pictures of bb's set from the wings. dude was wearing an all-white three-piece suit and looked *sharp*.

Albert King was so great. I have a place in my heart for those gritty/greasy blues guitar players. Freddie King, Magic Sam and especially Hubert Sumlin. When I was a teenager I worked at a club in Pasadena, CA called The Ice House. It was a famous comedy club, but occasionally did music in the main room, but also had a small ‘cabaret’ room that did music nightly. Probably could only fit 75 people in that room. Got to see James Harmon with Hollywood Fats on guitar. Fats was amazing

When I was a teenager I worked at a club in Pasadena, CA called The Ice House. It was a famous comedy club, but occasionally did music in the main room, but also had a small ‘cabaret’ room that did music nightly. Probably could only fit 75 people in that room. This first one I really loved was John Lee Hooker. Has a 2 cd box set of his old sessions.

Gritty, greasy .......just perfect.
Sooooooo much of his pure soul in his music. Just him, his guitar and his classic wooden board to stomp his foot.

Was about 14 at the time, it floored me.

I read through some of that thread. The Bloom probably shouldn’t be considered a full fledged sequencer, but it’s super fun to experiment with. On so many of those electronic music forums I get the feeling a bunch of those folks want to push a button and get instant tech house, or whatever. So many complain about what a module or synth ‘can’t’ do instead of letting it be what it is and diving in to try to make something interesting. I dunno, I’ve had a blast using the Bloom and use it often

have we talked about hollywood fats before?

one of the times i saw albert king, fats was playing with him. he was 16 (we were 13-14, so we were *impressed*). i thought he was sitting in, but i mentioned this memory to the guy i was with and he said he was touring with him. crazy. (by the way, for l.a. folks, this was at the legendary ash grove, a really small room that had amazing people come through . . . which later became the improv comedy club)

i saw fats with the blasters and he was by far the best thing about them.

i know another musician who was in rehab with him. unfortunately, it didn't stick with fats.

I keep hearing tell of the second shot being the eviller of the two. Yet everyone I've talked to who's had both shots (BioNtech or whatever variant's name is) has found the first to be the more problematic.

For both my wife and I, the second shot was a walk in the park compared to the first.





Saw BB at a small downtown hotel in Edmonton, had ring side seat with my Dad and friend in tow, I may have been 15/16. The hotel gig was just before he became "big" again, it was a small venue and very intimate — you might've gotten sprayed by his sweat flicking off his signature vibrato...

Band & BB kills it (we're seated next to the horn players). Afterwards BB's handing out picks and looking around the room and then walking over to people and handing them the pick, shaking their hand. My chair at our table is right next to the stage and I'm practically foaming at the mouth like a pup straining at the tether waiting to be fed after the human comes home from work... But BB keeps looking away at the last second and giving a pick to someone else... I can't control myself I'm practically loosing my mind thinking "Pick ME PICK ME!" and everybody's got a pick by now but me... he turns to me, smiles warmly walks across the room and hands me his last pick. I was OTT grateful.

Looking back, I'm sure he was just having a bit of fun with the lanky lad in the corner with the puppy-dog eyes...
BB might be more show-biz, but that's understandable given the duration of his career and in the process learning what people want and giving it to them — Gotta keep bringin' home the bacon, after all. Showman sure, but that "sincerity" mentioned is authentic.

I still have the pale blue pick with "BB" in a white, simple sans-serif font.



As for R.Crayfish — wow! I thought I was the only one can't stand his bluzak. I really found it unlistenable from the get go.


Big John Lee Hooker fan, and Mississippi John Hurt — They're like the yin/yang of the blues.

For grit, I like Muddy Waters.

Well after over 3 months with the MicroFreak I think I fully willing to admit that I’m « synth disabled ».
I definitely don’t have the patience you guys have to create patches. I RTFM, I know the basic functions, but I still can’t « make » anything with it. I could just as well use any iPad soft synth.

Zéro new ideas, zero recorded tracks, zip , nothing.....
Maybe because I’m so used to sample and chopping synth stuff???

Sux, but hey. It is what it is.

know your limits but try new things you can't find stuff if you don't explore. but if your goal is to be a creator then you can't be a full-time explorer.
