Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I've been an Alembic F-2B preamp user for years - one thing I learned is that bass: 2, mid: 10, treble: 2 is close to flat. I usually run mine Bass 4-5, Mid 5-7, Treble 2-4 - slightly mid-scooped but I like it.

I also have a tube compressor (Custom Audio Electronics/Japan V-Comp) that I run 95% of the time (bass or synth). Lately for bass I've been using that and my old Boss PQ-3B parametric eq. This is all "studio" recording (direct into my antiquated ProTools rig), I do use the compressor live too but haven't had much opportunity the past couple of years. Pretty much all my Soundcloud recordings from the past 7-8 years have the CAE comp, and Alembic pre as well until the past couple of years when I've switched to the Boss.

So recently you're going comp > Boss EQ > ProTools, leaving the F-2B out altogether?

Yeah - not because I don't like the F-2B, I think it was when I was playing along with CDs/mp3s a lot and experimenting with the Boss pedal. At some point I should do some sound clips. I can't always tell the difference myself, but sometimes others can.

a good sound is a good sound

(as a tangent: i often think there’s no such thing as a bad sound; one just needs to find the right place to use it.)

Is that a challenge? lol

Challenge accepted.

I believe I have found the right place, or at least a place to help me spend my money. I've got a friend who has been building modular synths for years and I'm almost frightened to jump down that rabbit hole.

Welcome! We can definitely help you spend money.

This is totally true. Relatedly, sometimes I get weird sounds out of my gear and I’m not sure what to make of them, and the sometime later I find a use in an unexpected setting. It’s like a spice drawer.

In other news I have had a little noodling time the past few days.

I just programmed a bunch of sounds for my post rock band on the Typhon. It’s really an astoundingly good sounding and programmable analog synth. There are menus but for the most part they make sense and I only had to look at the manual once. While you can’t overdrive the filter input, it’s got 5 flavours of distortion. I cannot complain. I even replicated a granular patch from the iPad using very fast square wave LFOs, a pair of triangle oscillators, pitch shift and reverb, all on board the synth. Also every synth should have knobs to morph whole envelopes. Very useful.

I also spent some time with the Cosmos and the Octatrack. It’s easy enough to sample, and use the OT as a sort of envelope and VCA for it.

I also tried to intentionally reproduce the noise patch I accidentally unveiled on a Zoom call 10 days ago. If you let it go long enough it eventually degrades into something not too far from white noise.

I’m still not totally in love. Will experiment more tonight or this week. It could also be my lack of understanding.

In my fatigued moments this week I have been starting to wonder if I want an analog poly….
