Agreed about the sound in a place thing…
I have no use for really loud feedback / oscillation etc type dirt… and yet I can’t get enough of nine inch nails year zero where most the album is made up for that stuff!
There’s even a bridge part where it had the two worst sounds in the world but somehow just uses the rythm to make it musical hah
passed on the mini nova synth - if ever get to the end of exploring all of my software synths maybe I’ll get to hardware.

Hits:
Moog DFAM & Subharmonicon - I know these aren't for everybody but I am loving them! My music has already gone in directions it never would have otherwise - or actually, in directions I have wanted to go in for years but wasn't able to make happen - until now...
Way Huge Small Pork & Pickle - been wanting an overdrive that doesn't lose the low end - this seems to be the answer for me.
Misses:
SolidGoldFX Beta - bought it a couple of years ago, but this year finally sold it. Should have bought the Deluxe, I really didn't like the baked-in bass-bump.
Back from the Forgotten Gear Pile:
So glad to have my Doepfer MAQ 16/3 sequencer up and running again! Also my MFB-503 Drumcomputer. I could so easily get sucked into the modular rabbit hole...
Wishlist:
The Moog Grandmother is tempting, especially to go along with the DFAM etc., but then the paraphonic aspect makes the Matriarch more sensible for me, but by then this is all dreaming, win-the-lottery kind of stuff.
I am still kind of lusting after one of the new 5-string Rickenbackers. Even started considering trading off my '76 Autumnglo 4001, but not ready to make that leap...
Kind of want a crazy reverb - already have a Strymon blueSky which is fine for "normal" reverb, don't really like the "shimmer" aspect. I need to stay away from that "reverb for bass" thread, although I'd probably be using it more on non-bass stuff.

Yeah, MTL is like a whole other world.
Too big of a city for me personally.

Get yourself an Empress Reverb. It's incredible. Both normal and crazy reverb sounds.
Since I've once again gotten myself stranded for almost two months without any pedals, synthesizers, basses -- or, honestly, any musical instruments/equipment whatsoever* -- I might as well comment about Quebec City: I spent a week at an AirBnB in the Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge area a couple years ago and wow, what a lovely neighborhood! Definitely felt like I could've spent another few weeks there and still not explored all the cool nooks and crannies.
Also, I got arrested for fishing without a license, and your Federal Prosecutors are so nice!!!
*I'm actually about to go buy a flat-top steel string acoustic guitar just to have something to bang on here. Not sure how much ambient post-rock textural music that'll wind up on, but it'll at least keep me sane.

I went to Quebec City once but I just did the tourist stuff, which was nice but never gives a true feel for a place IMO. Isn't the mad genius behind Gorguts from Quebec City?
Not to mention it functions as a looper, and trem/chorus/flanger, and has a couple of delay + reverb settings.
what are people using for smallish powered studio (audio) monitors?

I looked at the Yamaha HS 5 & 8 but they felt scooped to my ear. I looked at similar KRK Rokit models because they are so common but they sounded like the midrange was congested and weirdly pronounced. I decided the Genelec was just more than I was willing to go for. Obviously, lots of good mixes have come out on various monitors.
The A7X was a bigger pill than I wanted to swallow, but I couldn't find anything I was satisfied with at a lower point. The T7V were just coming out at that time.
I still have the pair of Mackie HR824 that I bought in 1998. Sometimes I’ll also use a pair of Truth Audio TA-1P, but they’re passive so I have to yank the Crown power amp out of my big bass rig when I want to use those.
Catching up with today’s posts. I love rural Quebec, my wife and I love living in Montreal. We only visited Quebec City once and did the tourist stuff and it was ok. Now we know more people there so I could see going back post Covid. Since our visit, I have wanted to make a hip hop record called Eel of Orleans.
Stuff is crazy right now with Omicron, though.
I have an old pair of Adam A7s that I really like.
I took the Typhon to practice tonight and it sounded great and was sooooo easy to edit.

Big Focal fan here. My main monitors are the Focal ShapeTwins, which are a bit spendy, but my other Focals are Alpha 80’s and they’re killer. Much more affordable. Alpha 65’s are really good too and even more affordable
I have the M-Audio BX5 because they were the best of the options at the store (to my ears) when I needed monitors. I won't say they're the best options in the world, but they get the job done.
